Beyond Meat Inc. is expanding its product portfolio by introducing plant-based ground beef.
Beyond Beef will be available at select stores nationwide from next week. The new product is meant to taste, feel, and smell just like ground beef.
Beyond Meat, an alternative meat maker, has previously introduced plant-based burgers, sausages and chicken strips. According to the company, the plant-based meat products are intended to satisfy the global demand for meat at a fraction of the environmental impact.
Beyond Meat said Beyond Beef provides more versatility because it can be used in a slew of meals, such as tacos and dumplings to bolognese and sliders. It can also be used to form personalized beef patties for burgers.
“Beyond Beef is the first plant-based ground meat made without GMOs, soy or gluten to deliver on the versatility, meaty texture and juiciness of ground beef,” the company said in a statement.
Sold in one pound packages, the plant-based protein is made of a mix of pea, mung bean and rice, and still has a meat-like texture. The ground beef texture has 20 grams of protein per 4-ounce serving.
Beginning June 24, Beyond Beef will start arriving in participating stores including Whole Foods Market, Kroger, HEB, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, Mariano’s, Sprouts, Ralphs and Wegman’s.
Last week, Beyond Meat had released a new, meatier version of its Beyond Burger with “marbling that melts and tenderizes just like beef.”
