Citi cardholders can earn 5% cash back for online purchases Thanksgiving week, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Some of the offers you see on the page are from our partners like Citi and American Express, but our coverage is always independent. Terms apply to the offers listed on this page.

  • Citi has just launched a promotion on most of its personal and small-business cards. You can earn 5% cash back for online shopping between November 24 and November 30.
  • Enrollment is required, and a handful of cards aren't eligible — but popular cards like the Citi® Double Cash Card, Citi Premier® Card, and Citi Rewards+℠ Card are included.
  • You'll earn 5% cash back as a statement credit on up to $500 in online spending on each card you enroll, for a maximum of $25 cash back.
  • The 5% cash back is on top of the rewards you'd normally earn with your Citi credit card, and stacks with limited-time bonuses like the Citi Prestige® Card 5x for online, cable, and streaming purchases (up to a maximum of $1,500 combined) until the end of the year.
  • You can even triple-dip by starting your shopping at an online shopping portal to earn even more rewards.
  • Read Business Insider's guide to the best credit cards for online shopping.

Credit card issuers continue to add new ways to earn and redeem rewards during quarantine, and now Citi has introduced a great bonus for cardholders who plan to shop online during Thanksgiving week, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

From November 24 to November 30, most Citi personal and small-business cardholders can earn 5% cash back when they enroll and use their card to shop online, on up to $500 in spending. That equates to a maximum of $25 cash back per account — not a bad haul for holiday purchases you'd make anyway.

Citi 5% cash back for online shopping

To qualify for the 5% cash back promotion, you must enroll first at citi.com/giving or by calling the number on the back of your card between November 16 and November 30. You'll then earn 5% cash back as a statement credit for up to $500 in online purchases between the time you enroll or November 24 (whichever is later) and November 30.

Most Citi personal and small-business cards are included in the promotion, but there are a few exceptions:

  • Corporate, professional, debit, and retail cards (including, but not limited to, Best Buy, Macy's, Home Depot, L.L. Bean, Shell, and Sears) aren't eligible
  • Authorized users of the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi (read review), Costco Anywhere Visa® Business Card by Citi, and CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® (read review) also aren't included
  • Accounts that were opened after October 23 don't qualify (your account must still be open and in good standing as well)

It's important to note that a merchant must code the transaction as an online purchase to trigger the bonus.

Stack this promotion with regular earning and bonuses

The great thing about this bonus is that you'll earn 5% back on top of the regular rewards you'd earn with your card. For example, the Citi® Double Cash Card ranks high on our list of the best credit cards for online shopping, because it earns 2% cash back (1% when you buy, and 1% when you pay) on all purchases. When you add the 5% cash back from this promotion, you'll earn an impressive 7% total cash back for your online purchase.

Or, if you're the primary cardholder on the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, shopping at Costco.com during the promotion period would also net you a total of 7% back — 2% at Costco.com, and 5% from this deal.

This offer also stacks with Citi's limited-time credit card spending category bonuses, like the bonus for online shopping with the Citi Prestige® Card. Until the end of the year, cardholders can earn 5x Citi ThankYou points on up to $1,500 in combined online, cable, and streaming purchases.

Other Citi cards eligible for the 5% cash back online shopping bonus include:

  • Citi Premier® Card (read review)
  • Citi Prestige® Card (read review)
  • Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® (read review)
  • Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ Mastercard® (read review)
  • American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card
  • Citi Rewards+℠ Card

You do have to enroll each card separately to activate the bonus, but each registered card is eligible to earn the maximum of $25 cash back (5% of $500).

Earn even more by using an online shopping portal

You could even triple-dip on earning rewards by using an online shopping portal. When you navigate to a retail site via a shopping portal, you can earn bonus points, miles, or cash back on your purchase on top of rewards from your credit card.
