This month, millions of Americans took to the polls to vote for the next President of the United States. Democrat Joe Biden won more votes than any other candidate in American history.

However, rather than graciously congratulating his opponent, Donald Trump took the opposite route and made accusations of voter fraud.

Sources close to the White House have said Mr Trump will refuse to attend the inauguration of the “phoney President” as he continues to claim, without evidence, that he was cheated in the election.

Mr Trump has even claimed he will not attend the inauguration as it would be an “insult to democracy”.

But now Andrew Neil, the former BBC journalist who hosted coverage of the TV channel’s US election results night, has lashed out at the Republican and claimed any efforts to “undermine” the results were “going nowhere”.

He tweeted: “Can we all agree, much as there may be some small and insignificant questions at the margin, that Trump’s efforts to undermine the outcome of the 2020 election are going nowhere.

“Rightly so. Joe Biden is the next President of the United States.”

Mr Trump has filed several lawsuits claiming voter fraud and Republicans are looking to raise $60million to fund them.

“Trump is surrounded by his family and an army of lawyers and has been constantly on the phone,” a source previously said.

“He is in fighting mode and is saying Biden would be a phoney President and that he won’t turn up on January 20 [Inauguration Day] as that would be an insult to democracy.”

Another source added: “His sons and closest aides have been egging him on while no one else dares raise the delicate matter that he has lost and needs to consider life post-presidency.

“In his mind, he never looked past Election Day because he is superstitious and he thought it was bad luck.

“Now he’s hell-bent on creating a narrative that the election was fraudulent and so Biden is not legitimate.

“He believes there was a conspiracy against him from day one of his presidency – with the Russian influence hoax, the fake impeachment and now the fake election.”

Following Mr Trump’s actions during and after election week several Republicans have distanced themselves from him.

Larry Hogan, the Maryland governor, said: “There is no defence. No person or election is more important than our democracy.”

GOP rep Adam Klinzinger called Trump’s comments at his press conference “insane”.

“We want every vote counted, yes every legal vote (of course),” he said.

“But, if you have legit concerns about fraud present EVIDENCE and take it to court.

“STOP Spreading debunked misinformation.

”This is getting insane.”

Even Twitter has censored some of Mr Trump’s tweet saying his claim about election fraud is “disputed”.

Just yesterday, Mr Trump tweeted: “I won the Election!”

Twitter marked the tweet with: “Multiple sources called this election differently.”
