One dead and over 450 in hospital with mystery illness in India

At least one person has died and more than 450 taken to hospital following an outbreak of a mystery illness in India.

The unidentified illness was detected on Saturday evening in Eluru, an ancient city in India’s Andhra Pradesh state, which is famous for its hand-woven products.

Since then, the patients tested negative for Covid but have reported symptoms ranging from nausea and anxiety to loss of consciousness.

A 45-year-old man who was in hospital with symptoms similar to epilepsy and nausea died on Sunday evening, local media reported.

District surveillance officer Dolla Joshi Roy said 455 people were taken to hospital and 200 had since been discharged, the Guardian reports.

Officials are now desperately trying to determine the cause of the illness.

So far, water samples from affected areas have not shown any signs of contamination.

Andhra Pradesh has been badly hit by coronavirus, with more than 800,000 detected cases.

The health system in the state, like the rest of India, has been frayed by the virus.
