Millions of Brits could find themselves under even harsher Covid rules by the end of this month over fears Tier 4 is not slowing down the spread of Covid-19, experts have warned

Earlier this week, Brits already living in Tier 4 were warned by government sources that they were facing ramped-up restrictions that would essentially form a new "Tier 5" lockdown in a bid to stop the spread of the new mutant coronavirus strain..

And now it appears a number of experts are predicting the same thing – with many expecting a "Tier 5" level of greater restrictions for anyone who was moved into Tier 4 when those restrictions were first brought in.

That would mean it was mainly London and the south east of England that found themselves under any newly-introduced restrictions.

It is unclear whether or not this new level of greater lockdowns would be called Tier 5, however.

Professor Paul Hunter, an infectious disease specialist at the University of East Anglia, told the Mail Online that he expected any new harsher lockdown to be centred on London.

He said: "Whether it's the capital as a whole or particular local authorities within that, I'm not sure how they'll do it, but I expect it would be difficult to put some authorities in and leave others out."
