High street favourite Debenhams is to close six branches forever – including its flagship Oxford Street shop.

Stores in Portsmouth, Staines, Harrogate, Weymouth and Worcester are other casualties of the cull.

The closures mean that up to 320 members of staff could be affected.

Debenhams was plunged into liquidation after crunch talks to rescue the 242-year-old retailer amounted to nothing.

JD sports pulled out a deal to potentially save the department store, which has been in administration since Spring 2020.

Eventually all remaining Debenhams’ stores will disappear from UK high streets, having been a staple for well over a hundred years .

It has been selling its stock for discount prices ahead of the shutters closing for good.

Geoff Rowley, joint administrator to Debenhams and Partner at FRP Advisory, told The Sun today: "We continue to engage with interested parties over alternative proposals for the future of Debenhams.

"Inevitably the latest lockdown has had an effect on our plans for the wind-down of the business.

"We regret the impact on those colleagues affected by today’s announcement and would like to thank all those who continue to keep the business trading in very difficult circumstances."

In total, 12,000 jobs have been put at risk since the department store giant entered administration.

Debenhams has already cut about 6,500 jobs since May and now has 12,000 workers across 124 stores who could be made redundant.
