Sign up today for the best stories straight to your inbox<\/p>\n<p>Parents charged with the murder of their 12-year-old daughter who suffered a head lice infestation so bad it triggered a heart attack have been bailed.<\/p>\n<p>More troubling details have emerged surrounding the untimely death of American schoolgirl Kaitlyn Yozviak, who passed away on August 28 last year.<\/p>\n<p>It was discovered she&apos;d had a fatal heart attack caused by severe anaemia, which was likely the result of a case of head lice that investigators say was the worst they&apos;d ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of her death Kaitlyn was living in a filthy house in Macon, Georgia which was infested with rats, and she hadn&apos;t bathed for a week. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk\/incoming\/article23316425.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615b\/0_Screen-Shot-2020-09-30-at-144758.jpg\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<figure data-mod=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk\/incoming\/article22119318.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615\/0_screen_shot_2020-06-01_at_110929.jpg\"><\/figure>\n<p>Daily Star&apos;s newsletter brings you the biggest and best stories \u2013 sign up today<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Experts believe she would have been living in constant agony for years after being repeatedly bitten by lice. <\/p>\n<p>Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) Special Agent Ryan Hilton testified in September that Kaitlyn was suffering from the most severe lice infestation he&apos;d ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>He said he believed repeated lice bites lowered her blood iron levels, causing anaemia and ultimately the fatal cardiac arrest.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant District Attorney Brent Cochran told media prosecutors are still awaiting Kaitlyn&apos;s autopsy results and medical tests to determine exactly why she died. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk\/incoming\/article23316432.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615b\/0_Screen-Shot-2020-09-30-at-144803.jpg\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<figure data-mod=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk\/incoming\/article22769219.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615\/0_Screen-Shot-2020-09-30-at-1448_Main.jpg\"><\/figure>\n<p>Parents charged with murder after girl&apos;s severe head-lice infestation killed her<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Neighbours told police they hadn&apos;t seen Kaitlyn playing around the house in the two months leading up to her death. <\/p>\n<p>Her parents, Mary Katherine Horton, 37, and Joey Yozviak, 38, were charged with second-degree murder and second-degree child cruelty.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday they were each granted $100,000 (\u00a373,220) bail. <\/p>\n<p>A second couple, Michele and Dwyatt Creamer, have said they were due to adopt Kaitlyn in June 2008 before Horton and Yozviak changed their minds and kept the baby.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk\/incoming\/article23316435.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615b\/0_Screen-Shot-2020-09-30-at-144809.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>The Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFSC) opened a case into the family after her parents chose not to give her up for adoption.<\/p>\n<p>However they did not receive any reports until 2018 when a call reported the home was infested with bugs and full of cats. <\/p>\n<p>DFSC documents show that Kaitlyn&apos;s two brothers have been removed from the family home because of unsanitary conditions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Family<\/li>\n<li>Crime<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailystar.co.uk\/news\/world-news\/girl-head-lice-bad-triggered-23316228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read Full Article<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Daily Star&#8217;s FREE newsletter is spectacular!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":108379,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[23056],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.7 -
