A TIMBER merchant was given a send off with a difference – with his coffin attached to his forklift truck driven by his son.<\/p>\n

Mourners lined the streets of Wheatley Hill, to pay their respects to Tony Carr, who died on Boxing Day aged 88.<\/p>\n

Son Jeremy, who drove the forklift, said:\u201c He was a well respected man in the village. Everyone knew him.<\/p>\n

"He bought the truck in 1980.<\/p>\n

"About two or three years ago I said jokingly to him \u2018when you go I\u2019m going to take you to your funeral in it\u2019.<\/p>\n

"I stuck to my word.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a young man Tony studied construction and brickwork at night school, before starting his own woodworking business.<\/p>\n

He later bought the timber business in Wheatley Hill after seeing a boom in DIY, creating businesses employing more than 20 people.<\/p>\n

Research has found that many people are ditching the traditional hearse for the likes of The traditional hearse is being ditched in favour of\u00a0JCBs, motorbikes and on one occasion a milk float.<\/p>\n
