It all began on February 4th: \u201cDoge,\u201d tweeted Tesla founder Elon Musk, underneath a picture of a rocket blasting off toward the moon.<\/p>\n

Since that fateful day, Elon Musk seems to have caught a bit of an obsession with good ol\u2019 $DOGE. Over the course of the last several days, Musk has tweeted no less than nine times about DogeCoin, mentioning DOGE specifically in no less than six of the Tweets.<\/p>\n

\u201cDogecoin is the people\u2019s crypto,\u201d Musk wrote on February 4th. \u201cno need to be a Gigachad to own…no highs, no lows, only Doge.\u201d Musk also posted a meme of himself as Rafiki from the Lion King holding a Doge-Simba up to the sun. \u201cUr welcome,\u201d he whispered–I mean, wrote.<\/p>\n

Snoop Doge; \u201cGod of Doge\u201d<\/h2>\n

Other celebrities have also jumped on the DOGE train. Snoop Dogg also joined in the Fun on Saturday, February 6th, when he tweeted an altered picture of one of his album covers with the words \u201cSnoop Doge.\u201d Snoop tagged Elon Musk.<\/p>\n

The same day, KISS frontman Gene Simmons tweeted that “I bought even more dogecoin. Why? Because I believe it will go up. But that\u2019s just me.\u201d Simmons also called himself the “God of dogecoin.”<\/p>\n

Is this for real?<\/h2>\n

Then, on Sunday, February 7th, Musk presented a musical number: \u201c\ud83c\udfb6Who let the Doge out\ud83c\udfb6,\u201d he tweeted.<\/p>\n

Later on the same day, Musk linked to an \u201cinstructional\u201d Youtube video by YouTuber ZimoNitrome on the…uh…merits of DogeCoin. (The video is actually just an animation of the Doge meme flying in a rocket around the planet earth.)<\/p>\n

Additionally, more than 2.4 million people responded to a poll that Musk made on his Twitter account asking about \u201cThe future currency of Earth.\u201d Responders had two choices: \u201cDogecoin to the Moooonn\u201d and \u201cAll other crypto combined.\u201d 71.3% of the vote went to the former.<\/p>\n

How serious could these celebrities–led be Elon Musk–be about DogeCoin? It\u2019s unclear. However, their tweets (especially Musk\u2019s) have had very real consequences: Finance Magnates reported earlier today that DogeCoin has become the world\u2019s 10th-most valuable cryptocurrency by market cap.<\/p>\n

Indeed, Musk\u2019s tweets seem to have been a major causative factor in a 40% DOGE price jump within the last 24 hours.<\/p>\n

\nElon musk tweeted about Doge coin, and in less than an hour it has rose in value at about 50%. He\u2019s Unarguably the Biggest influencer in the world.<\/p>\n

However, not everyone is happy about the celebrities\u2019 sudden enthusiasm about DogeCoin. A post with 980 upvotes on the r\/Cryptocurrency Reddit page said that \u201cthis doge situation is seriously damaging to crypto.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cElon Musk literally tweeting \u2018Doge\u2019 and it skyrocketing the way it has is just giving more reasons for governments to take legal action against crypto,\u201d wrote the author of the post, user u\/Jones9319.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cSo many will lose money from this and any credibility Elon Musk has about crypto will be gone. The whole doge thing is funny, sure, but I\u2019m not sure we want mainstream media using it to define crypto as a literal joke.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the events of the last several weeks in the investment world have proved anything, it’s that crypto is not the only asset that may be susceptible to crowd-sourced hype. Traders on the r\/WallStreetBets subreddit have pumped GameStop Inc (NYSE:GME) from roughly $18 a share one month ago to $64 at press time; at one point, the stock’s price rose as high as approximately $350.<\/p>\n
