and urged ministers to adopt extreme caution in any easing of restrictions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The PM is being pulled the other way by his backbenches, who are concerned Britain&#8217;s economy will continue to suffer if lockdown is not lifted fast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It came as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>The so-called R-rate is now below one in every region and stands at between 0.7 and 0.9 for the whole of the UK, which is the lowest level since summer;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>It was revealed illegal migrants were getting the Covid jab in plush quarantine hotels in Heathrow;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Matt Hancock said he hopes Covid will become a &#8216;treatable&#8217; claims.<\/p>\n<p>On the current rate of reduction in Covid cases, official scientific advisers think it is likely to take until the start of May for numbers to come down low enough to consider easing restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>Government scientists are sticking to the mantra &#8216;the lower the better&#8217; and are likely to push for infections to be at similar levels to June and July last year, when the first lockdown was lifted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They also believe current travel restrictions reduce the chance of new Covid mutations \u2013 such as those found recently in Bristol and Liverpool \u2013 being spread around the country.<\/p>\n<p>Officials warned last night that hopes of families being reunited with relatives in different parts of the country at Easter hang in the balance.<\/p>\n<p>Whitehall sources said ministers are waiting for more data showing the vaccine&#8217;s effect on transmission of the virus before deciding if UK-based getaways will be allowed.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lord Adebowale today urged ministers to revise the March 8 date for reopening schools for fear of it driving another spike in infections.<\/p>\n<p>He told BBC Radio 4&#8217;s Today programme: &#8216;We have to be really careful, really systematic about easing any lockdown. What we cannot afford is another peak.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I understand the pressure to open schools. We need to do so very safely. The last thing we want is to go into further restrictions.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>But Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, Conservative MP for the Cotswolds, said: &#8216;It is just as dangerous for the nation to be too cautious in unlocking.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;A sufficient proportion of the population will have been vaccinated by April.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;There is no reason why the vast bulk of the economy \u2013 shops, pubs, restaurant \u2013 shouldn&#8217;t be allowed to begin to open then.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>He added that holidays in the UK should be allowed before Easter &#8216;or if not, immediately after&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford said he hoped it might be possible to allow holidays in Wales.<\/p>\n<p>At a press conference in Cardiff, he suggested self-catered accommodation may reopen if infection rates continue to decline.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I&#8217;m trying to give an indication that if everything continues to improve, we will do what we can to respond to [the tourism industry&#8217;s] wish to be able to resume trading over the Easter period,&#8217; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/02\/13\/07\/39210906-9255421-The_Office_for_National_Statistics_ONS_report_today_suggested_su-a-28_1613202396963.jpg\" height=\"640\" width=\"962\"><\/p>\n<p>The Office for National Statistics (ONS) report today suggested suggested there were 695,400 Covid-19 cases in England alone by February 6, down 31 per cent from a fortnight ago in yet another firm sign the second wave is in retreat. There will come a point when there will be a death rate from Covid but at a normal level and we have to cope with that. Obviously we still try and prevent it but we accept it, I think. There are 24,352 Covid-19 patients in hospitals, down 40 per cent from the peak.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday is the first time since July 31 the Government&#8217;s scientific Sage advisers said they were confident the R-rate was below one across the UK.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The rate, which was 1.4 in the first week of January, is the average number of people infected by someone with the virus. It must be below one for the epidemic to shrink.<\/p>\n<p>Sage said: &#8216;We are confident the epidemic is shrinking across all NHS England regions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;However, prevalence of the virus remains high, so it remains important that everyone continues to stay at home.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Although officials are hopeful that the downward trajectory will continue, Government scientists warned it could be months before cases are low enough to lift lockdown safely.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, a separate weekly report from the Office for National Statistics confirmed infections were falling.
