Security Council on Wednesday to discuss the threat facing the more than 160 million people living in areas of instability and conflict, such as Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a moral duty to act, and a strategic necessity to come together to defeat this virus,\u201d Raab said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>He will also urge U.N. members to come together to support equitable access to vaccines, warning that new virus variants will take hold in places where people have not been vaccinated, potentially threatening the rest of the world with new waves.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico is also expected to raise concerns about unequal access to vaccines globally. Britain says it has provided 548 million pounds ($762 million) to help developing countries through the sharing initiative COVAX.<\/p>\n<p>The British push for vaccination ceasefires could be a first key test of cooperation at the United Nations between China and the new administration of U.S. President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>Long-simmering tensions between China and former U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s administration hit boiling point at the United Nations over the pandemic, highlighting Beijing\u2019s bid for greater multilateral influence in a challenge to Washington\u2019s traditional leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Wracked by bickering between China and the United States,<\/p>\n<p>the 15-member U.N. Security Council took more than three months last year to endorse a call by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for a global pandemic ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration accused Beijing of a lack of transparency that it says worsened the COVID-19 outbreak.
