{"id":118415,"date":"2021-03-24T22:03:44","date_gmt":"2021-03-24T22:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/precoinnews.com\/?p=118415"},"modified":"2021-03-24T22:03:44","modified_gmt":"2021-03-24T22:03:44","slug":"psaki-defends-white-house-firing-staffers-over-marijuana-use-it-is-still-illegal-federally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/precoinnews.com\/politics\/psaki-defends-white-house-firing-staffers-over-marijuana-use-it-is-still-illegal-federally\/","title":{"rendered":"Psaki Defends White House Firing Staffers Over Marijuana Use: &#8216;It Is Still Illegal Federally&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>The White House defended its firing of five White House staffers over past marijuana use, with press secretary Jen Psaki suggesting that \u201cother security issues\u201d had factored into employees being let go.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At a Wednesday press briefing, a reporter pressed Psaki on the Biden administration <\/span><span>terminating five employees<\/span><span> over previous marijuana consumption, even though staff were \u201cled to believe pot use would not be disqualifying.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Psaki insisted that the administration had worked with the security service, \u201cwhich makes this determination\u201d and that \u201cin the past, the rules were actually far more stringent.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMarijuana is legal in a number of states across the country \u2014 it is still illegal federally,\u201d Psaki said, adding that in terms of the five people no longer employed, for \u201ca number of them, there were other security issues that were raised.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Psaki insisted that other team members who would not have been able to serve in previous administrations due to stricter policies were currently working for President Joe Biden.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf marijuana was federally legal, that would be a different circumstance,\u201d Psaki said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Over<\/span><span> a dozen states<\/span><span> have legalized the use of recreational marijuana.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2019, then-Democratic presidential candidate <\/span><span>Kamala Harris spoke of her own previous marijuana use<\/span><span>, saying that the drug \u201cgives a lot of people joy,\u201d and supported it being legalized at the federal level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Biden has not backed federal legalization<\/span><span> of marijuana, instead <\/span><span>supporting decriminalizing<\/span><span> its use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Daily Beast reported last week that <\/span><span>dozens of Biden administration staffers were disciplined<\/span><span>, and some asked to resign, due to their past marijuana use.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Psaki defended the decision late last week, pointing to the administration\u2019s original announcement saying that <\/span><span>marijuana use wouldn\u2019t \u201cautomatically\u201d be disqualifying<\/span><span>.
