{"id":118675,"date":"2021-03-27T20:08:11","date_gmt":"2021-03-27T20:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/precoinnews.com\/?p=118675"},"modified":"2021-03-27T20:08:11","modified_gmt":"2021-03-27T20:08:11","slug":"footage-shows-durham-landmark-set-on-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/precoinnews.com\/world-news\/footage-shows-durham-landmark-set-on-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Footage shows Durham landmark set on fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Shocking moment crowds of youths gathered around burning Durham landmark after it was torched causing \u00a310,000 worth of damage<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Temple of Minevra near Sedgefield was attacked by yobs on March 19<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Footage shows the suspects push a wheelie bin to the temple and set it alight<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A member of the public handed the footage over to the local authority\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Durham Constabulary have launched an investigation and are appealing for help\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Shocking footage shows a crowd of youths gathered around a blaze at an iconic County Durham landmark.<\/p>\n<p>The Temple of Minerva at Hardwick Park near Sedgefield sustained damage estimated at between \u00a35,000 and \u00a310,000 to repair after being targeted last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is believed a wheelie bin was propped against the temple and set alight, causing severe fire and smoke damage to the paintwork of the structure, and leaving molten plastic from the bin stuck to its flagstones.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/03\/26\/19\/40990754-9407375-image-a-1_1616787728417.jpg\" height=\"840\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The yobs left beer bottles lying on the ground beside the melted plastic on the monument<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/03\/26\/17\/40986906-9407375-image-a-1_1616780202827.jpg\" height=\"381\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>These are the shocking scenes as a group of yobs set fire to\u00a0The Temple of Minerva at Hardwick Park near Sedgefield causing damage costing between \u00a35,000 and \u00a310,000<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/03\/26\/17\/40987306-9407375-image-a-2_1616780981948.jpg\" height=\"476\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The Temple of Minerva was one of four Gothic ruins in the grounds of the park which were restored following a \u00a34.1m Heritage Lottery Fund grant, with work completed in 2010<\/p>\n<p>On the same night, an interpretative metal sculpture in the park was also pulled from its concrete base.<\/p>\n<p>Smashed glass bottles and rubbish were also left strewn around the temple. Durham County Council, which owns the park, has since sealed off the damaged area of the temple to visitors. Officers have been assessing the damage to the structure.<\/p>\n<p>Last Friday&#8217;s incident was attended by County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service while Durham Constabulary is investigating.<\/p>\n<p>The council has handed video footage supplied by a member of the public to police, which shows a crowd of what appears to be young people gathered right beside the fire.<\/p>\n<p>The footage also shows some of the group jumping over the flames while shouts of encouragement can be heard.<\/p>\n<p>Oliver Sherratt, the council&#8217;s head of environment, said: &#8216;The Temple of Minerva is a truly wonderful spectacle much enjoyed by visitors to Hardwick Park and we are sure people will be saddened to hear of this incident and the damage caused.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We are still assessing the extent of the damage but it is likely to run into thousands of pounds and the repairs are an unnecessary drain on our resources.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Having seen the footage, it is clear that the people filmed were putting themselves in serious danger by standing so close to an uncontained fire, and in some cases jumping over the flames.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Those in the footage were also clearly not obeying coronavirus restrictions purely in terms of the number of people gathered.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It appears from the footage that these were young people and we would encourage parents to ensure they know what their children are doing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We are grateful for the assistance we&#8217;ve had from our police and fire service colleagues following this incident and would urge anyone with information to please report it to Durham Constabulary on the 101 non-emergency number.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Dave Glendening, divisional manager south at the fire and rescue service, said: &#8216;With the Easter holidays fast approaching, and with Covid-19 restrictions set to be easing, we want to advise all parents and carers to play their part in helping to prevent these types of incidents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;They can do this by talking to their children and young people about the dangers of starting deliberate fires, and the fact they could be putting themselves in harm&#8217;s way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Not only that, but these types of incidents take our valuable resources away from where they are needed most and can have a devastating impact on the community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We would encourage anyone who has any information in relation this fire, to contact Firestoppers anonymously on 0800 169 5888 or report online by visiting www.firestoppersreport.co.uk.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The Temple of Minerva was one of four Gothic ruins in the grounds of the park which were restored following a \u00a34.1m Heritage Lottery Fund grant, with work completed in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9407375\/Footage-shows-Durham-landmark-set-fire.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read Full Article<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shocking moment crowds of youths gathered around<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":118674,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[23056],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.7 -
