General Assembly in 2014<\/b><strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Barack Obama&#8217;s grandmother Sarah has died in Kenya aged 99, her relatives confirmed Monday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She passed away around 4 a.m. local time while being treated at a hospital in Kisumu, Kenya&#8217;s third-largest city for an undisclosed illness, her daughter Marsat Onyango said.<\/p>\n<p>President Barack Obama had been informed of the death and has sent his condolences, according to family spokesman Sheik Musa Ismail. He confirmed her death was not COVID related.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Obama, was the second wife of President Obama&#8217;s grandfather and helped raise his father, Barack Obama, Sr. The family is part of Kenya&#8217;s Luo ethnic group.<\/p>\n<p>President Obama often showed affection toward his step grandmother and referred to her as &#8216;Granny&#8217; in his memoir, &#8216;Dreams from My Father.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He described meeting her during his 1988 trip to his father&#8217;s homeland and their initial awkwardness as they struggled to communicate which developed into a warm bond.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She attended his first inauguration as president in 2009. Later, Obama spoke about his grandmother again in his September 2014 speech to the U.N. She was at least 99 years old<\/p>\n<p>For decades, Mama Sarah, as she was known, promoted education for girls and orphans in her rural Kogelo village. She raised many in her home.<\/p>\n<p>The Mama Sara Obama Foundation helped provide food and education to children who lost their parents &#8211; providing school supplies, uniforms, basic medical needs, and school fees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her daughter Onyango said Monday: &#8216;She died this morning. We are devastated.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Mama was sick with normal diseases she did not die of COVID-19,&#8217; a family spokesman Sheik Musa Ismail said, adding that she had tested negative for the disease. He said she had been ill for a week before being taken to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>She will be buried Tuesday before midday and the funeral will be held under Islamic rites.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The passing away of Mama Sarah is a big blow to our nation. She was at least 99 years old<\/p>\n<p>Already a national celebrity after the former Illinois senator Barack Obama visited Kenya in 2006, Sarah&#8217;s modest homestead became a tourist attraction with Obama&#8217;s November 2008 election triumph.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Born in 1922 in a village on the shores of Lake Victoria, Sarah was the third wife of Hussein Onyango Obama, President Obama&#8217;s grandfather, a herbalist and a village elder who fought for the British in Burma, now called Myanmar.<\/p>\n<p>Onyango Obama, who died in 1975, is said to be the first man to swap goatskin clothing for trousers in his village.
