We can very easily get to the next election with people waiting over two years. It&#8217;s easy to do that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The whole issue of access [to care] is a greater threat to the NHS than privatisation because poor access undermines confidence amongst those people who fund the service \u2013 taxpayers.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>He said\u00a0the NHS is now struggling to give people who need urgent cancer or heart surgery their procedure within 28 days for the first time in its history.<\/p>\n<p>Sir David \u2014 who was CEO of the NHS from 2006 to 2014 before Sir Simon Stevens took over \u2014 said these &#8216;priority two&#8217; patients need to be operated on or risk their health deteriorating rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8216;Even the waiting list problems that I dealt with in my career, we\u2019ve never had that problem, of people who need treatment within 28 days or they will deteriorate. That\u2019s a big, big, big issue.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/04\/03\/10\/41290490-9432499-image-a-10_1617441264133.jpg\" height=\"378\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/04\/03\/10\/41290488-9432499-image-a-11_1617441269450.jpg\" height=\"378\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Data shows there are now 304,044 people waiting at least a year for surgery \u2014 up from just 1,613 before the pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The NHS Constitution requires 92 per cent of people waiting are meant to be treated within 18 weeks\u00a0but a third of patients have already waited longer than that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Professor Neil Mortensen, the president of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, echoed Sir David&#8217;s words, saying the country &#8216;desperately needs a clear and well-funded plan to deal with the backlog&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>It comes after One Cancer Voice, a coalition of 47 cancer charities, warned cancer deaths will rise for the first time in decades unless urgent action is taken to tackle the backlog.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The charities argued more money and staff are desperately needed to address problems stemming from the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/03\/11\/13\/40338704-9350303-image-a-9_1615469805148.jpg\" height=\"424\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Record number of people (28,000) in January faced waits of more than two weeks to see a cancer specialist after being told they might have the disease<\/p>\n<p>The charities \u2014 speaking collectively for the first time\u00a0\u2014 also asked for the NHS to be given greater access to private facilities.<\/p>\n<p>They said almost 45,000 UK patients &#8216;living with cancer without knowing it&#8217; should have started treatment in 2020 but did not due to delays caused by coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Cancer experts today praised the charities for raising awareness of &#8216;the biggest crisis in oncology&#8217; seen in more than 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>Official data released last month showed cancer waiting times have spiked during the pandemic because hospital staff and surgeries have been preoccupied with coronavirus patients.<\/p>\n<p>The proportion of suspected patients seen by a specialist within the two-week target hit a record-low of 83 per cent in January, NHS England said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It means nearly 30,000 people with suspected cancer waited more than a fortnight to find out whether or not they had the disease in January.
