But they rose again last week, muddying the picture of the US jobs recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Another 744,000 American workers filed first-time claims for unemployment benefits on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the Labor Department. It was an increase from the week before, but more notably, it was far more claims than economists had predicted.<br \/>\nJust two weeks ago, initial jobless claims dropped to 658,000, the lowest level since the pandemic hit American shores. But since then, the trend in the data has reversed course.<\/p>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<p>But there is some good news: Conditions are much better than they were a year ago, when more than 6 million workers filed for unemployment assistance. Last week&#8217;s March jobs report also showed that the recovery is chugging along, with 916,000 jobs added to the economy.<\/p>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Jobless claims may bounce around week to week as the recovery takes hold, but we expect they will start to decline more consistently as the economy gains momentum,&#8221;  Nancy Vanden Houten, lead economist at Oxford Economics, wrote in a note to clients.<\/p>\n<p>She expects a hiring boom in the spring and summer as more businesses fully reopen.<br \/>\nOn top of regular state claims, 151,752 people filed for benefits under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program that&#8217;s designed to help the self-employed and gig workers.<br \/>\nAdded together, nearly 893,000 people filed for benefits last week (that figure is not adjusted for seasonal swings).<br \/>\nAnnElizabeth Konkel, economist at the Indeed Hiring Lab, said it&#8217;s good news that the decline came from fewer workers needing benefits through the PUA program.<\/p>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;While initial claims need to fall much farther to return to even remotely &#8216;normal&#8217; levels, at least there is movement in the right direction,&#8221; she said in a note.<br \/>\nContinued jobless claims, which count applications that have been filed for at least two weeks in a row, stood at 3.7 million on a seasonally adjusted basis in the week ended March 27.
