Stunned critics erupted in anger Friday amid reports of the pending creation of a congressional Frankenstein with a Third Reich mustache: An \u201cAmerica First Caucus\u201d aimed at pushing \u201cuniquely\u00a0Anglo-Saxon political traditions.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe America First Caucus (AFC) exists to promote Congressional policies that are to the long-term benefit of the American nation,\u201d says a caucus document circulating among lawmakers and the media.<\/p>\n
The group aims to \u201cfollow in President Trump\u2019s footsteps, and potentially step on some toes and sacrifice sacred cows for the good of the American nation,\u201d according to its platform.<\/p>\n
\u201cHistory has shown that societal trust and political unity are threatened when foreign citizens are imported en-masse into a country,\u201d the document notes.<\/p>\n
The caucus calls for limiting legal immigration \u201cto those that can contribute not only economically, but have demonstrated respect for this nation\u2019s culture and rule of law.\u201d It bizarrely supports infrastructure \u201cthat reflects the architectural, engineering and aesthetic value that befits the progeny of European architecture.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), an immigrant, pointed out to reported caucus organizers Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) that he served in the military to \u201cdefend your right to say stupid stuff.\u201d Nevertheless, he added, \u201cTake your nativist crap and shove it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Surprisingly, the new group was quickly bashed by House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy\u00a0(and quickly endorsed by GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida). McCarthy is a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump, who\u00a0endorsed Greene and her \u201ctraditions\u201d right from the start. But McCarthy slammed Greene\u2019s proposed caucus as a \u201cnativist dog whistle.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a striking indication of what could be a devastating division among the hard-right Republicans in Congress, Freedom Caucus member Rep. Ken Buck\u00a0(R-Colo.) slammed the \u201chatefulness\u201d of the new group\u2019s perspectives.<\/p>\n
Wyoming GOP Rep. Liz Cheney said flatly: \u201cRacism, nativism, and anti-Semitism are evil.\u201d Republicans, she tweeted, \u201cbelieve in equal opportunity, freedom, and justice for all.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.) pointed out that Republicans\u2019 current favorite author, Dr. Seuss, connected \u201cAmerica first\u201d (a phrase long associated with\u00a0the Ku Klux Klan) directly to Hitler\u2019s Nazi Party.<\/p>\n
Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) warned the nascent caucus to not \u201cdare\u201d contact him to support any of its legislation. \u201cWouldn\u2019t want my non Anglo, Colombian, Mexican indigenous blood to corrupt you,\u201d he angrily tweeted.<\/p>\n
Rep. Adam Kinzinger\u00a0(R-Ill.) demanded that anyone who joined the caucus should be stripped of their committee positions. \u201cWhile we can\u2019t prevent someone form calling themselves Republicans, we can loudly say they don\u2019t belong to us,\u201d he said on Twitter.<\/p>\n
