He was\u00a0watching a video livestream when\u00a0Judge Peter Cahill read the verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.<\/p>\n Guilty. Guilty. Guilty.<\/p>\n Wow, Usmani thought, as Chauvin was convicted on\u00a0two counts of murder and one count of manslaughter\u00a0in the\u00a0of death of George Floyd, who died\u00a0while Chauvin had him handcuffed with a knee\u00a0on his neck.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n The 32-year-old said he felt relieved, but not satisfied.<\/p>\n “I hope people recognize this is not enough and this alone is not justice,” he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n A half-hour later, news broke that Columbus police had shot and killed a 16-year-old Black girl after responding to\u00a0a 911 call at 4:35 p.m. EDT Tuesday about an attempted stabbing.<\/p>\n What we know about the fatal shooting of Ma’Khia Bryant: <\/strong>Columbus police release bodycam footage; officer on leave<\/span><\/p>\n The deep sighs of relief, drawn by the Black community, protesters,\u00a0activists and allies after Chauvin’s guilty verdict\u00a0were punctured by the news of\u00a0another\u00a0death of a Black person at the hands of police.<\/p>\n “Relief is just so tepid. It’s\u00a0tepid because I know this does not protect the next\u00a0person\u00a0from getting shot, protect the next person from being\u00a0brutalized,”\u00a0Usmani said. “The police just can’t stop themselves from killing Black people even with all the attention on this.”<\/p>\n The shooting comes as many advocates\u00a0\u2013 from community activists to members of Floyd’s family to high-profile civil rights attorney Ben Crump\u00a0\u2013\u00a0around the country stress that progress is still needed in the areas of police reform and racial equity.<\/p>\n \u201cGiven the history of these kinds of cases, I was surprised,\u201d\u00a0Floyd\u2019s brother, Terrence, told the USA TODAY Network on Tuesday\u00a0in New York’s Times Square.\u00a0\u201cI know there\u2019s still more work to be done.”<\/p>\n Body camera video released by Columbus police Tuesday shows an officer approaching a driveway with a group of young people standing around. In the video, it appears\u00a0that\u00a0the 16-year-old, identified as\u00a0Ma\u2019Khia Bryant, pushes or swings at a person who falls to the ground.<\/p>\n Bryant\u00a0then appears to swing a knife at a girl who is on the hood of a car, and the officer fires his weapon what sounds like four times, striking the girl.<\/p>\n A police officer shot and killed 16-year-old Ma\u2019Khia Bryant after arriving on the scene to respond to reports of attempted stabbing in Columbus, Ohio.<\/p>\n USA TODAY<\/span><\/p>\n Ramon Obey II, an activist and president of JUST (Justice, Unity & Social Transformation), a community organization in Columbus that hosts a biweekly food program, watched the Chauvin verdict on TV with his mom, sister and younger\u00a0brother.<\/p>\n “We were very unsure on how this would turn out,” he said, recalling how his mom remembered being glued to the TV almost 30 years ago after the officers who beat Rodney King were acquitted.<\/p>\n The 23-year-old described the feeling of hearing a guilty verdict to the butterflies in your stomach that drop while riding a rollercoaster.<\/p>\n “I’m flabbergasted,” he said.\u00a0“It’s honestly\u00a0like the words can’t come to me quick enough, because even\u00a0though I’ve seen a man murdered on video, I didn’t know if America had seen a man murdered on video.”<\/p>\n But his\u00a0excitement was short-lived.<\/p>\n After hearing news of the police shooting in Columbus on Tuesday,\u00a0Obey said he was unsurprised.<\/p>\n “The system of policing is broken, and until change takes place we are doomed to keep repeating these tragedies,” he said.<\/p>\n![](\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/uxstatic\/usatoday\/usat-web-static-5018.1.0\/images\/sprites\/icon_close.png\"){kind=icon}
