Ashfaq Kayani told the president in the hours after Navy Seals undertook the daring raid that resulted in bin Laden&#8217;s death in an Abbottabad compound where bin Laden was hiding out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pakistani military personnel had showed up at the bin Laden family compound and gotten confirmation from family members, according to a new\u00a0account on the 10th anniversary of the May 2011 raid published in\u00a0 Politico.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/04\/30\/22\/42430440-9531071-image-a-1_1619817855752.jpg\" height=\"817\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>A new oral history recounts the raid that got Osama bin Laden<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. would ultimately obtain highly scientific confirmation \u2013 as well as coarse efforts to eyeball the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Admiral Willam McRaven, who oversaw special forces carrying out the raid, asked a Navy SEAL to lie down next to bin Laden&#8217;s corpse, now ensconced in a body bag, to get a rough measurement of his height.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I knew that bin Laden was about 6-foot-4. I saw some young SEALS standing nearby and I said: \u201cHey son, how tall are you?\u201d He said, \u201cSir, I\u2019m 6\u2019 2.\u201d I say, \u201cI need you to lie down here.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McRaven recounted the episode in his own book, &#8216;Sea Stories,&#8217; and Obama included it in his own, &#8216;A Promised Land.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>SEALS had crossed over into Jalalabad, Afghanistan with bin Laden&#8217;s body, but it was hours before the White House would announce the raid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/04\/30\/22\/42430444-9531071-image-a-2_1619817873167.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Former President Barack Obama solicited views from top advisors including former Vice President Joe Biden on the decision to go in, scene here from the situation room on May 1, 2011<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/04\/30\/22\/42430434-9531071-image-a-3_1619817919111.jpg\" height=\"334\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The compound, within which al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed, is seen in flames after it was attacked in Abbottabad in this still image taken from video footage from a mobile phone May 2, 2011<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/04\/30\/22\/42430422-9531071-image-a-4_1619817939617.jpg\" height=\"422\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p> President Barack Obama (R) leaves together with Vice President Joe Biden (L) after he addressed the nation publicly for the first time since the shock election of Donald Trump as his successor, on November 9, 2016 at the White House<\/p>\n<p>According to Mike Leiter, former director of the National Counterterrorism Center, Obama broke the ice with a quip on a video conference.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;You just blew up a $65 million helicopter and you don\u2019t have enough money to buy a tape measure?&#8217; he joked to McRaven.<\/p>\n<p>The new oral history by Garrett Graff also describes the difficult decision to decide whether to go ahead with the raid.<\/p>\n<p>The contours of that advice is already known: with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reluctantly urging action, and former Vice President Joe Biden stressing caution.<\/p>\n<p>According to former deputy national security advisor Ben Rhodes, Biden&#8217;s role in a key Thursday strategy session before Obama authorized the raid was partly the role of &#8216;devil&#8217;s advocate&#8217; \u2013 just hours before a raid that had to take place between Friday and Monday because there would be no moon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/04\/30\/22\/42430424-9531071-image-a-6_1619817954416.jpg\" height=\"429\" width=\"306\"><\/p>\n<p>Retired\u00a0General Ashfaq Kayani<\/p>\n<p>Biden, the former chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, stressed the potential for blowback in Pakistan \u2013 whose government was infuriated by the incursion into its territory. The U.S. feared providing notice could cause a leak that would botch the operation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Biden had worked a lot on Pakistan over the years, and he really laid out the risk of this going wrong and the potential for confrontation with the Pakistanis,&#8217; said Rhodes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Our embassy being overrun, the fallout that could ensue. I don\u2019t remember it as being firmly against as much as it being about like, \u201cI\u2019m going to point out the downsides that you need to consider from the perspective of Pakistan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Said former CIA Director John Brennan: &#8216;I think Joe Biden was most concerned about if it was a failed mission, what it would mean for Barack Obama and his prospects for a second term.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Following the Situation Room discussion that Rhodes called &#8216;incredibly dramatic,&#8217; Biden pulled Rhodes and chief of staff Denis McDonough into a small conference room.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<span>\u201cYou guys think he\u2019s going to do this?\u201d Biden asked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8216;We both said, \u201cYes, absolutely. He always said he would.\u201d&#8217;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8216;What was interesting about that is that Biden said, \u201cLook, I see my role as trying to stretch out his options.\u201d In a sense, Biden was just trying to make sure that Obama had a bunch of room for his decision-making.
