Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of jailed drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, will almost certainly cut a deal with prosecutors spelling the end of the notorious Sinaloa Cartel, according to a former DEA boss.<\/p>\n
The former teenage beauty queen was arrested at Washington\u2019s Dulles International Airport on February 22, for conspiracy to unlawfully import and distribute illegal drugs.<\/p>\n
According to some reports, Coronel turned herself in as part of a prearranged deal with the US Department of Justice.<\/p>\n
As well as involvement in El Chapo\u2019s drugs empire, Coronel is also suspected of having had a hand in her husband\u2019s daring escapes from jail.<\/p>\n

El Chapo broke out of maximum security Puente Grande prison in 2001 and, after recapture, tunnelled out of Altiplano Federal Penitentiary in 2015. Both of these jailbreaks are said to have involved complex operations with huge bribes paid to prison guards and other conspirators.<\/p>\n
Mike Vigil, former chief of international operations for the DEA and the author of several books on the drugs cartels, predicts that Coronel, 31, will \u201cturn on the Sinaloa cartel\u201d rather than endure a long prion sentence.<\/p>\n
Coronel has twin nine-year-old daughters with El Chapo, and the prospect of not seeing them grow up will be a strong motivator to making a deal with the authorities.<\/p>\n

Coronel\u2019s co-operation would be a significant prize for the DEA: \u201cShe has a great deal of historic information about how the cartel functions, she knows all of the leaders,\u201d Vigil told The Sun, adding \u201cshe knows all of the drug routes, she knows all the officials the cartel pays.\u201d <\/p>\n
The drug lord\u2019s wife is also thought to have valuable information about which businesses help the cartel launder money.<\/p>\n
Coronel has long maintained that her lavish lifestyle isn\u2019t founded on drug money and she has substantial legitimate income: \u201cWe have businesses,\u201d she told Telemundo in December 2018. \u201cI can\u2019t talk about them because the media turns everything I say into a big scandal\u2026 I own some farmland, things like that, but I\u2019d rather not discuss it.\u201d<\/p>\n

After anonymous sources told Vice that the Dulles \u201carrest\u201d was in fact an arranged surrender and Coronel had already made a deal with federal prosecutors, her lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, responded furiously. <\/p>\n
Lichtman, who also served as Chapo\u2019s lead trial counsel, said: \u201cI\u2019m stunned that the feds would do this,\u201d Lichtman said. \u201cThere\u2019s zero chance it\u2019s anyone else. And it\u2019s sickening. She\u2019s got kids. I\u2019m happy to respond to this allegation if you tell me who leaked it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Coronel will be quite aware of the potential dangers of turning on the cartel. Before marrying El Chapo, when he was 47 and she was just 18, she was already a cartel insider. She is daughter of Ines Coronel, another prominent Sinaloa Cartel member, and the FBI alleges she \u201cgrew up with knowledge of the narcotics trafficking industry\u201d.<\/p>\n

Bonnie S. Klapper, a former narcotics prosecutor in the Eastern District of New York, suspects that El Chapo might have had a hand in his wife\u2019s plea deal: \u201cIt\u2019s possible El Chapo said, \u2018I don\u2019t want my wife to spend the rest of her life in jail, I want a decent place for my kids to grow up, let\u2019s arrange some things,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaybe this was sort of an elaborate show. They arrest her, make it very public, are fighting for her detention because she\u2019s already cooperating or she wants to cooperate and they want to throw people off the track.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mike Vigil says that Coronel will also want to win her freedom in order to get her hands on El Chapo\u2019s hidden millions: \u201cA lot of the money from selling drugs in the United States wasn\u2019t laundered,\u201d he says, \u201cbut moved back and buried. And she will have access to that.\u201d<\/p>\n
