{"id":126000,"date":"2021-05-22T15:17:02","date_gmt":"2021-05-22T15:17:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/precoinnews.com\/?p=126000"},"modified":"2021-05-22T15:17:02","modified_gmt":"2021-05-22T15:17:02","slug":"thousands-have-eyes-removed-after-developing-black-fungus-in-covid-hit-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/precoinnews.com\/world-news\/thousands-have-eyes-removed-after-developing-black-fungus-in-covid-hit-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands have eyes removed after developing &#8216;black fungus&#8217; in Covid-hit India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands of people have lost their eyes after developing &quot;black fungus&quot; in Covid-ravaged India.<\/p>\n<p>After a catastrophic second wave of coronavirus, the explosion of mucormycosis is causing panic across the country. <\/p>\n<p>Around 60% of patients that doctors are treating have been forced to have one or both eyes removed, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>Those who have recovered from Covid-19 are more likely to get mucormycosis or &quot;black fungus&quot; because Covid is treated by steroids, which can suppress the immune system.<\/p>\n<p>After being discharged from hospital following treatment for Covid-19 one patient, Anil Wankhede, developed a headache and a swollen right eye.<\/p>\n<p>His wife urged him to tell his brother but the 54-year-old refused to trouble his sibling, reports the Times.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.mirror.co.uk\/incoming\/article24163279.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615\/0_JS235401267-1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>His family took him to several doctors before he was diagnosed mucormycosis, also known as &quot;black fungus&quot; which is sweeping the country.<\/p>\n<p>It is caused by moulds that are in the environment but can kill people whose immune system is weakened. <\/p>\n<p>After the spores are breathed in, the condition attacks the lungs and sinuses before spreading, often to the face.<\/p>\n<p>Ten days after his eye first became sore Wankhede saw a specialist, who told him the only option was an operation which involved stripping his sinuses and removing his right eye to stop it spreading.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Akshay Nair told the Times: &quot;If we don&apos;t remove the entire contents, along with all the tissue, nerves and eyelid, the infection can invade the brain. At the stage, we can&apos;t save their lives,&quot;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<figure data-mod=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk\/incoming\/article24150636.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615\/0_qbmain.jpg\"><\/figure>\n<p>Royal Family are &apos;no longer thinking about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle&apos;<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s2-prod.mirror.co.uk\/@trinitymirrordigital\/chameleon-branding\/publications\/dailystar\/img\/logo-schema-dailystar.png\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The outbreak was described as &quot;rampant&quot;
