and encourage people to speak about it.<\/p>\n<p>The display at M Shed forms the first part of the public consultation, with a survey also launched for people to provide their views on the future of the statue and of how Bristol&#8217;s history is told.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It&#8217;s not an exhibition, it&#8217;s not trying to answer all the questions,&#8217; after being retrieved from the harbour.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It would have been a very conscious decision to make it go up and it would cost quite a lot of money because it can&#8217;t stand up by its own, it&#8217;s actually fallen apart,&#8217; He has become a controversial figure in the city, with thousands previously calling for the statue to be removed peacefully. The statue was dragged through the streets by angry protesters towards the city docks\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the statue was pulled down, hundreds of people that had attended the protest laid their placards around its empty plinth.<\/p>\n<p>More than 500 of these were collected by teams from the city council before being carefully dried out and stored. Only six form part of the current display at M Shed.<\/p>\n<p>A selection of quotes, representing a range of reactions to the statue being toppled, form a slideshow on the wall behind it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;This display isn&#8217;t trying to be from an idealistic position or from an ideological position and celebrating or commiserating, it&#8217;s trying to be balanced,&#8217; Dr Sobers added.<\/p>\n<p>The display, focusing on the Colston statue, is on the same floor as a permanent exhibition at M Shed that details Bristol&#8217;s role in the transatlantic slave trade.<\/p>\n<p>Ray Barnett, head of collections and archives at Bristol City Council&#8217;s culture team, said painstaking work to preserve both the statue and placards from the protest had taken place.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Most of the placards were just pieces of cardboard and they&#8217;d been left out on the site and it had rained so our first task was to stop them falling apart and turning into mush,&#8217; Mr Barnett said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/06\/07\/17\/29331680-8396511-image-a-44_1591548121828.jpg\" height=\"641\" width=\"962\"><\/p>\n<p>Protesters cheered as they forced a monument into the water at Bristol Harbourside. We had them all out in our studios to gradually dry out and they were lay down so they wouldn&#8217;t lose their shape and become contorted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;With the statue itself, the metalwork is pretty robust but it had been damaged by the scraping along the pavement and a couple of pieces are missing from it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;There was a wax layer originally on the statue with paint on top of that, so we gradually washed out the silt and dried out the statue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We had to be very careful as it dried out that the wax layer didn&#8217;t dry and fall off, taking the paint with it, because we felt it was our duty to say this is the situation after the protest, this is what the statue looks like.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Barnett described the display as &#8216;work in progress&#8217; but it was important to quickly provide context to what happened, including the controversy that had surrounded the statue for decades.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;There has been this disagreement, people have differing views about the situation but now the city needs to pull together and we&#8217;d like people to give their views as to how that can be achieved,&#8217; Mr Barnett added.<\/p>\n<p>The Colston statue: What next? opens at M Shed on Friday.<\/p>\n<h3>Edward Colston: Slave trader, philanthropist and a son of Bristol<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"448\"><\/p>\n<p>The Edward Colston statue in Bristol was pulled down by demonstrators last year<\/p>\n<p>Edward Colston was born to a wealthy merchant family in Bristol, 1636.<\/p>\n<p>After working as an apprentice at a livery company he began to explore the shipping industry and started up his own business.<\/p>\n<p>He later joined the Royal African Company and rose up the ranks to Deputy Governor.<\/p>\n<p>The Company had complete control of Britain&#8217;s slave trade, as well as its gold and Ivory business, with Africa and the forts on the coast of west Africa.<\/p>\n<p>During his tenure at the Company\u00a0his ships transported around 80,000 slaves from Africa to the Caribbean and America.<\/p>\n<p>Around 20,000 of them, including around 3,000 or more children, died during the journeys.<\/p>\n<p>During Colston&#8217;s life, slavery was being actively encouraged by King Charles II, with many European countries taking part in the trade.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Colston&#8217;s brother Thomas supplied the glass beads that were used to buy the slaves.<\/p>\n<p>Colston became the Conservative MP for Bristol in 1710 but stood only for one term, due to old age and ill health.<\/p>\n<p>Historian and broadcaster David Olusoga said one of the main problems the statue caused was that people did not understand why it was a source of upset for many in the city.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;This is a city that is about 14% BAME with a statue of somebody who was not just a slave trader, he was involved in the Royal Africa Company, the company that trafficked more people into slavery than any in British history,&#8217; he told BBC News.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The fact that it has not been seen as a problem for such a long time, that so many people are confused as to why the statue offends and upsets so many people, has been the problem.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Colston donated money to causes in and around Bristol before his death in 1721 &#8211; including to the city&#8217;s churches, founded almshouses, Queen Elizabeth&#8217;s Hospital School, and founding a religious school for boys.<\/p>\n<p>According to Historic England, his involvement in the slave trade was the source of much of the money which he bestowed in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Due to his philanthropy, Colston&#8217;s legacy has been honoured by the city he once called home, where streets, memorials and buildings bear his name.<\/p>\n<p>An inscription on the statue, which was built in 1895, read: &#8216;Erected by citizens of Bristol as a memorial of one of the most virtuous and wise sons of their city.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Following Colston&#8217;s death in the 18th century, he was described as &#8216;the brightest example of Christian liberality that this age has produced&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His charitable efforts helped inspire philanthropists in future generations, today the Dolphin Society provides help to vulnerable and elderly people who wish to remain independent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The society says it is &#8216;seeking to emulate the charitable endeavours of Edward Colston,&#8217; but distances itself from the &#8216;evils of slavery, both in the days of Colston and in the appalling levels of modern day slavery&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>A statue was erected in his honour as well as other buildings named after him, including Colston Hall.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Campaign group Countering Colston has called for an end to Bristol &#8216;publicly celebrating&#8217; the controversial figure, and for the city to recognise the &#8216;true history of transatlantic slavery, colonialism and exploitation&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>An 11,000-strong petition said the statue of Colston had &#8216;no place&#8217; in Bristol&#8217;s &#8216;beloved&#8217; city centre.<\/p>\n<p>In a victory for campaigners, Colston Hall &#8211; Bristol&#8217;s largest concert hall &#8211; announced in 2017 it would be re-branding, while a school
