Members of Congress face plenty of tough decisions when voting on legislation that can shape the course of the nation. The measure to award a congressional gold medal to the Capitol Police officers who responded to the January 6th insurrection at the Capitol should not have been one of them. Nevertheless, 21 Republicans voted against it.<\/p>\n

Voting against honoring the police officers who responded to the riot that resulted in five deaths, including that of an officer, is hard to understand, especially from members of the party that prides itself on upholding law and order and backing the blue. “This is shameful and embarrassing,” Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) tweeted. “What the men and women of our @CapitolPolice and @DCPoliceDept went <\/span>through that day to protect and serve in the face of a violent mob—it deserves to be recognized with the highest honor the House can bestow.”<\/span><\/p>\n
