and &#8216;horrific&#8217; attempt to strangle press freedom and suppress non-woke or anti-woke views.<\/p>\n<p>It is the latest free speech row at Oxford, after 150 rebel academics\u00a0<span>threatened to boycott teaching and outreach work because Oriel College refused to take down a statue of Victorian imperialist Cecil Rhodes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Oxford students recently escalated the cultural wars after removing a portrait of the Queen from\u00a0Magdalen&#8217;s Middle Common Room due to the monarchy&#8217;s links to colonialism &#8211; They branded the move &#8216;horrific&#8217; and &#8216;bonkers&#8217; and warned of the threat it posed to press freedom\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Woke academics at Cambridge&#8217;s Churchill College are forced to SCRAP group that held event where WW2 PM was called a &#8216;white supremacist&#8217; and British Empire was branded &#8216;worse than the Nazis&#8217; after furious backlash<\/h3>\n<p>A controversial group which was set up at a Cambridge college to examine the links between Winston Churchill, race and the empire, has been scrapped.<\/p>\n<p>The team of academics and students at\u00a0<span>Churchill College decided to disband the group after heavy pressure to cancel a series of its events, it is understood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Working Group, which had been organised in the wake of George Floyd&#8217;s murder in May last year, was to examine the former Prime Minister&#8217;s views on race &#8211; but was accused by critics of being stacked with left-wing academics\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0intent on smearing the World War Two Prime Minister.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0held an event called &#8216;The Racial Consequences of Churchill&#8217;, during which a panellist said wartime leader Sir Winston was the &#8216;perfect embodiment&#8217; of &#8216;white supremacist philosophy&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The event also included claims that the British Empire was &#8216;far worse than the Nazis&#8217;.<span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sir Nicholas Soames, Churchill&#8217;s grandson accused the group of &#8216;trashing&#8217; the wartime leader&#8217;s reputation and suggested that the college should not be allowed to use his grandfather&#8217;s name if it continues to &#8216;smear&#8217; it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Each article had a &#8216;trigger warning&#8217; rating at the top for if it contains triggering words or contains triggering content. The whole thing already &#8211; before even the student sensitivity scan of each piece &#8211; felt really sad.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Cherwell, founded in 1920, is one of the UK&#8217;s oldest student publications. It counts authors Evelyn Waugh and Graham Greene as former editors.<\/p>\n<p>The campus newspaper was forced to apologise and remove an article &#8216;reappraising&#8217; composer Richard Wagner in January over complaints it was anti-Semitic. It makes Magdalen look pretty wet, but it&#8217;s not the end of the world.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p> &#8216;As regards the academics refusing to teach, I&#8217;m half tempted to say you should be lucky not to be taught by such a useless bunch, but if they are that feeble, what are you missing and what are they doing there? Why don&#8217;t they have any pride in their country, our marvellous history and our success?<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Rhodes is not a black and white figure, perhaps they&#8217;re not learned enough to have bothered to look up the history of Rhodes in any detail, which has been written about quite extensively now and as I say, he is a figure of importance and of interest and of enormous generosity to Oxford. Do they want to give the money back to the descendants of Cecil Rhodes, or are they intending to keep it to themselves?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/06\/21\/08\/44034205-9707701-The_rebel_academics_led_by_Professor_Kate_Tunstall_the_head_of_a-a-56_1624260640689.jpg\" height=\"593\" width=\"306\"><\/p>\n<p>The rebel academics, led by Professor Kate Tunstall &#8211; the head of another college &#8211; have threatened not to assist Oriel College with its outreach work and admissions interviews\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;So we must not allow this wokeness to happen, the idea of changing Churchill College, well perhaps we should introduce a Bill to rename Cambridge, Churchill and call it Churchill University and that would be one in the eye for the Lefties.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Trade minister Greg Hands gave his view on the issue, telling\u00a0LBC&#8217;s Nick Ferrari:\u00a0&#8216;Well look, I just hope that universities get on with their actual job which is teaching students and making sure students get the best possible degrees.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I&#8217;m not following all the ins and outs of everything that&#8217;s going on at every university, but I do wish that our focus was on learning.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;A lot of students are paying a lot of money on tuition fees and on living so I&#8217;d hope universities would focus on their core mission.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of those supporting the anti-Rhodes campaign is Robert Gildea, Professor of Modern History at Worcester College, who today\u00a0suggested Oriel College should place a sign saying &#8216;Sorry&#8217; around Rhodes&#8217; neck.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Professor Gildea was one of the signatories of the petition, and said the boycott is a way of &#8216;putting pressure&#8217; on the college after many alternatives had failed.<\/p>\n<p>He told BBC Radio 4&#8217;s Today programme: &#8216;One of the options offered by the commission was to retain and contextualise, so if the college put up a notice explaining who Cecil Rhodes was that would be fine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;If the college put a placard around his neck at lunchtime today saying &#8216;Sorry&#8217; that would also be fine.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Prof Gildea added that sculptor Antony Gormley&#8217;s suggestion that the statue be turned round to face the wall is also a &#8216;very interesting idea&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>A statement from the boycott organisers said: &#8216;Faced with Oriel&#8217;s stubborn attachment to a statue that glorifies colonialism and the wealth it produced for the college, we feel we have no choice but to withdraw all discretionary work and goodwill collaborations.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>It added: &#8216;The collegiate university can only effectively and credibly work to eradicate racism and address the ongoing effects of colonialism today if all the colleges do so.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Oriel College&#8217;s decision not to remove the statue of Cecil Rhodes undermines us all.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>A senior don slammed the boycott threat, telling the Mail: &#8216;This is despicable and mean-minded. It is unprecedented for the head of one college to attack and detract from the teaching of students at another college.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;This is politics based on ignorance and bias, and should have nothing to do with Oxford or any other university, where the principal aim should be to educate students and not damage their learning through left-biased agitation.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It comes after students at Magdalen College voted to remove a portrait of the Queen from their common room because she &#8216;represents recent colonial history&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Last month saw Oriel reject calls to tear down the statue of Rhodes, after an independent commission produced a 144-page report on the isssue following a long-running Rhodes Must Fall campaign.<\/p>\n<p>An Oxford student in the 1870s, Rhodes left money to Oriel on his death in 1902 and his statue stands on the college&#8217;s building on Oxford High Street. An imperialist, businessman and politician, he played a dominant role in southern Africa in the late 19th century, driving the annexation of vast swathes of land.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,400 people wrote to the independent commission with their views, including alumni who said removing Rhodes&#8217;s statue would amount to &#8216;censoring the past&#8217; and &#8216;erasing history&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The commission ultimately recommended that the statue be removed \u2013 but also highlighted how challenging it would be to conduct such work on a Grade II listed building. They will also refuse to interview prospective students, nor will they speak at Oriel talks and conferences.<\/p>\n<p>The petition has been spearheaded by Professor Tunstall, who has previously attempted to scrap the saying of grace before meals. Other apparent authors of the boycott statement include Sneha Krishnan, an associate professor in human geography at Brasenose, and two academics from St Antony&#8217;s College: Miles Larmer, professor of African history, and Simukai Chigudu, associate professor of African politics.<\/p>\n<p>The college is establishing a &#8216;task force&#8217; to look at how to &#8216;retain and explain&#8217; the statue, by making the public aware of the context and history behind it.<\/p>\n<p>A likely option is to add a plaque, but dons are also considering creating a &#8216;digital museum&#8217; about the statue, which could be accessed around the world.<\/p>\n<p>But the Rhodes Must Fall campaign called it a &#8216;slap in the face&#8217; and vowed to carry on fighting.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the campaign, a senior Oxford don said: &#8216;This is despicable and mean-minded. It is unprecedented for the head of one college to attack and detract from the teaching of students at another college.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;This is politics based on ignorance and bias, and should have nothing to do with Oxford or any other university, where the principle aim should be to educate students and not damage their learning through left-biased agitation.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Lord Wharton, the chairman of the Office for Students, told the Telegraph the boycott was &#8216;utterly unacceptable&#8217; if it led to students being &#8216;disadvantaged in any way&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Tory MP Tim Loughton added: &#8216;This is academic blackmail by a group of academics who think their own political views should trump everyone else&#8217;s, and if they don&#8217;t get their own way then any innocent students who happen to fall within their boycott will become the victims.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Oriel expressed &#8216;sadness&#8217; at the boycott threat.<\/p>\n<p>A statement said: &#8216;Oriel College undertook an extensive, academic and rigorous process advised by a ten-month long, independent commission of inquiry, established to consider the issues raised by the memorials and legacy of Cecil Rhodes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The commission did not make a recommendation on the removal of memorials.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We note with sadness that some fellow academics from other colleges at Oxford University have chosen not to respect the decisions of our governing body, not least because of the commensurate impact on our students and the wider academic community at Oriel, to whom we all have a duty of care. &#8216;\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>From &#8216;white supremacy&#8217; and would be &#8216;a slap in the face&#8217; to some students.<\/p>\n<p>And it added that musical skills should no longer be compulsory because the current repertoire&#8217;s focus on &#8216;white European music&#8217;
