<\/p>\nLEFTIE unions last night demanded a permanent furlough scheme to help Britain weather future crises.<\/p>\n
Radical plans drawn up by the TUC call on ministers to splurge billions of pounds more on wage subsidy schemes which would help protect against a financial crash, another wave of Covid, or the cost of going green.<\/p>\n

Germany and Japan both have such schemes which help protect workers from huge changes to the economy.<\/p>\n
Their plans would see workers get 80 per cent of their wages guaranteed by the stats in such a crisis – potentially adding billions more to Britain's already bloated debt mountain.<\/p>\n
Furlough has already cost Britain an eye-watering \u00a365billion alone, but is due to come to an end next month as the economy bounces back.<\/p>\n
TUC general secretary Frances O'Grady said: "The pandemic shows how an unexpected economic shock can wreak havoc on jobs and livelihoods with little warning.<\/p>\n
"Setting up a ''daughter of furlough'' to provide certainty to workers and firms through future industrial change would be a fitting pandemic legacy.<\/p>\n
"Furlough has been a lifeline for millions of working people during the pandemic. <\/p>\n
"Now is the time for the government to build on the success of furlough with a short-time working scheme \u2013 not throw away its good work." <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
