Prince Harry and Meghan Markle dined at the famous Harlem eatery Melba's during their public visit to New York and were so impressed that they decided to donate $25,000 (£18,000).

The ex-royal couple dined on soul food dish chicken and waffles in a first for the Queen's grandson.

After the visit was over, the ecstatic restaurant announced on Twitter that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had promised to donate $25,000 to show support for the restaurant during COVID-19 hospitality challenges.

The restaurant posted to Twitter stating: "It was such an honor to welcome Prince Harry & Meghan, the Duke & Duchess of Sussex to Melba’s! The team and I are so thankful for their visit and commitment to donating $25k & hope to welcome them back soon."

A diner who was eating at the restaurant during the couple's appearance said they enjoyed Southern fried chicken, waffles, spring rolls, catfish, yams and collard greens.

The lucky diner said: "Harry said it was the first time he’d ever tried chicken and waffles and remarked it was delicious."

They also claimed that Harry said collard greens were a family favourite due to Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, making the dish for the couple.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's appearance at the restaurant was reportedly enough to make the customers "choke on their chicken", the New York Post reported.
