She was picked up several hours later after the court issued an arrest warrant.<\/p>\n<p>The 96-year-old woman left her home near Hamburg in a taxi on Thursday morning, a few hours before proceedings were due to start at the state court in Itzehoe, court spokesperson Frederike Milhoffer said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ffx.io\/images\/$zoom_0.11%2C$multiply_0.4431%2C$ratio_1.5%2C$width_756%2C$x_0%2C$y_1\/t_crop_custom\/q_86%2Cf_auto\/5c04136f5bb81bbbf4ffbb7300d9b6d64ccf9e2a\" height=\"224\" width=\"335\"><\/p>\n<p><span>The dock sits empty in a courtroom in Itzehoe where the trial of a 96-year-old woman was due to start.<\/span><cite class=\"ojLwA\"><span>Credit:<\/span>AP<\/cite><\/p>\n<p>The court issued the warrant and delayed the reading of the indictment until the next scheduled hearing on October 19 because that couldn\u2019t be done in the defendant\u2019s absence.<\/p>\n<p>The accused woman previously had \u201cannounced that she didn\u2019t want to come\u201d to court, but the statement did not provide sufficient grounds for detaining her ahead of the trial, Milhoffer said. Given the woman\u2019s age and condition, she had not been expected \u201cactively to evade the trial,\u201d Milhoffer added.<\/p>\n<p>The court said on Thursday afternoon that the defendant had been caught and police would bring her to the court, German news agency dpa reported. A doctor was to examine whether she was fit to be jailed before the court decides whether or not to put her in custody.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors argue that the woman was part of the apparatus that helped the Nazi\u2019s Stutthof camp function during World War II more than 75 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The court said in a statement before the trial that the defendant allegedly \u201caided and abetted those in charge of the camp in the systematic killing of those imprisoned there between June 1943 and April 1945 in her function as a stenographer and typist in the camp commandant\u2019s office\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Despite her advanced age, the German woman was to be tried in juvenile court because she was under 21 at the time of the alleged crimes. German media identified her as Irmgard Furchner.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ffx.io\/images\/$zoom_0.137%2C$multiply_0.4431%2C$ratio_1.5%2C$width_756%2C$x_0%2C$y_0\/t_crop_custom\/q_86%2Cf_auto\/81243fe020d68f547fed3fbe2ffcbf890cf3523e\" height=\"224\" width=\"335\"><\/p>\n<p><span>A judicial officer looks at his watch as the start of the trial was delayed.<\/span><cite class=\"ojLwA\"><span>Credit:<\/span>AP<\/cite><\/p>\n<p>Efraim Zuroff, the head Nazi hunter at the Simon Wiesenthal Centre\u2019s office in Jerusalem, told The Associated Press that \u201cif she is healthy enough to flee, she is healthy enough to be incarcerated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Her flight, he added, \u201cshould also affect the punishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The case against Furchner relies on German legal precedent established in cases over the past decade that anyone who helped Nazi death camps and concentration camps function can be prosecuted as an accessory to the murders committed there, even without evidence of participation in a specific crime.<\/p>\n<p>A defence lawyer told <em>Der Spiegel<\/em> magazine that the trial would centre on whether the 96-year-old had knowledge of the atrocities that happened at the camp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy client worked in the midst of SS men who were experienced in violence \u2013 however, does that mean she shared their state of knowledge? That is not necessarily obvious,\u201d lawyer Wolf Molkentin said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ffx.io\/images\/$zoom_0.116%2C$multiply_0.4431%2C$ratio_1.5%2C$width_756%2C$x_0%2C$y_0\/t_crop_custom\/q_86%2Cf_auto\/ccf9f82438c22aa8a57ec1e9a2619c780b08f027\" height=\"224\" width=\"335\"><\/p>\n<p><span>Lawyer Wolf Molkentin is acting for the 96-year-old woman. <\/span><cite class=\"ojLwA\"><span>Credit:<\/span>AP<\/cite><\/p>\n<p>According to other media reports, Furchner was questioned as a witness during past Nazi trials and said at the time that the former SS commandant of Stutthof, Paul Werner Hoppe, dictated daily letters and radio messages to her.<\/p>\n<p>Furchner testified she was not aware of the killings that occurred at the camp while she worked there, dpa reported.<\/p>\n<p>Initially a collection point for Jews and non-Jewish Poles removed from Danzig \u2013 now the Polish city of Gdansk \u2013 Stutthof from about 1940 was used as a so-called \u201cwork education camp\u201d where forced labourers, primarily Polish and Soviet citizens, were sent to serve sentences and often died.<\/p>\n<p>From mid-1944, tens of thousands of Jews from ghettos in the Baltics and from Auschwitz filled the camp, along with thousands of Polish civilians swept up in the brutal Nazi suppression of the Warsaw uprising.<\/p>\n<p>Others incarcerated there included political prisoners, accused criminals, people suspected of homosexual activity and Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>More than 60,000 people were killed there by being given lethal injections of gasoline or phenol directly to their hearts, or being shot or starved.
