Two stone sphinx statues thought to be replicas turned out to be genuine Ancient Egyptian artifacts and have sold for almost \u00a3200,000.<\/p>\n
The owners of the statues, from Clare, Suffolk, bought the items fifteen years ago and believed they dated from the 18th or 19th century.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Wanting to sell the statues as they were moving house, the owners went to get them valued and sold at a local auctioneers.<\/p>\n
It was initially thought the carved sphinx statues would sell for between \u00a3300 and \u00a3500 when Mander Auctioneers in Sudbury first estimated their price.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The statues have a human head on the body of a lion. It was initially thought they would go for between \u00a3300-500 at auction and their owners thought they were replicas\u00a0<\/p>\n
They were in very bad condition since they were used as garden ornaments and had become covered in moss.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
A builder had also secured them to the ground with cement and repaired them in the past.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But at auction on October 9, the owners were shocked at the prices being offered by bidders.<\/p>\n
It was realised that the ornaments are Ancient Egyptian and likely to be more than 5,000 years old, according to the Metro.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Bidding began at \u00a3200 but people soon began offering sky-high sums of money for the statues after 15 minutes and they sold for \u00a3195,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The price they went for made them set a new house record for highest bid at the auction house.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0Auctioneer James Mander said:\u00a0\u00a0\u2018The bidding quickly went up to \u00a3100,000 and then seemed to stall, until the hammer finally fell at \u00a3195,000 to an international auction gallery, setting a new house record.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0Mr Mander said: \u2018This was an exciting day at the auction.<\/p>\n
\u2018These are one of the highest value lots to be sold at a provincial auction this year.\u2019<\/p>\n
They are now expected to be displayed in a museum, according to the East Anglian Daily Times.\u00a0<\/p>\n
