{"id":143794,"date":"2021-11-05T02:22:37","date_gmt":"2021-11-05T02:22:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/precoinnews.com\/?p=143794"},"modified":"2021-11-05T02:22:37","modified_gmt":"2021-11-05T02:22:37","slug":"nhs-nurse-finds-tiny-gold-bible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/precoinnews.com\/world-news\/nhs-nurse-finds-tiny-gold-bible\/","title":{"rendered":"NHS nurse finds tiny gold bible"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Some VERY Good News: NHS nurse is set to make hundreds of thousands of pounds after finding tiny gold bible believed to have belonged to relative of Richard III while metal-detecting on farmland near York<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Buffy Bailey, an NHS nurse, was searching farmland near York with husband Ian<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Her detector picked up a strong signal close to a footpath and she dug down\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The 48-year-old discovered solid gold Bible which has now left scholars stunned<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A metal detectorist has found a tiny gold Bible which is thought to have belonged to medieval royalty and is worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.<\/p>\n<p>Buffy Bailey, an NHS nurse from Lancaster, was searching farmland near York with husband Ian when her detector picked up a strong signal close to a footpath.<\/p>\n<p>The 48-year-old dug five inches down expecting to find little more than a sheep&#8217;s ear tag or an old can pull-ring.<\/p>\n<p>Instead she discovered a solid gold Bible which has left scholars stunned.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/11\/05\/00\/50084725-10167833-image-m-63_1636073854323.jpg\" height=\"709\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Buffy Bailey was searching farmland near York with husband Ian when her detector picked up a strong signal close to a footpath<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/11\/05\/00\/50084733-10167833-image-a-64_1636073891067.jpg\" height=\"555\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The NHS nurse\u00a0found a tiny gold Bible which is thought to have belonged to medieval royalty<\/p>\n<p>The small object, that is just 1.5cm long, weighs around 5g and is either 22-carat or 24-carat gold, dates back to the 15th century and is believed to have belonged to a relative of King Richard III.<\/p>\n<p>Experts have likened and connected it to the &#8216;Middleham Jewel,&#8217; a gold pendant that was discovered by a metal detectorist 40 miles away near to Middleham Castle, the childhood home of Richard III.<\/p>\n<p>It sold in 1992 for \u00a32.5million.<\/p>\n<p>Experts believe both items may have been engraved by the same blacksmith and gifted to the same owner &#8211; a female relative of the King who was about to give birth.<\/p>\n<p>Much like the Middleham Jewel, it has engravings of medieval patron saints of childbirth, including St Margaret of Antioch.<\/p>\n<p>The gold book is understood to have been found near Sheriff Hutton Castle in North Yorkshire, another property that belonged to Richard III who often resided there.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Bailey said: &#8216;Me and my husband go all around the country metal detecting. I just thought it&#8217;d be an old sheep&#8217;s ear tag or a pull ring.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;But when I took the clay off I realised it was something a bit different. My first thought was that it was some kind of charm from a gift shop.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I took a photo and enlarged it on my phone and that&#8217;s when I knew it was gold.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It was so heavy and shiny &#8211; just absolutely beautiful. When you held it into the light it threw rainbows at you.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I couldn&#8217;t believe it. I called my husband who was in another field and asked him to come get me because I just couldn&#8217;t move.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I told him, &#8216;I need to sit down,&#8217; but he said &#8216;I need to carry on looking!&#8217; He left me standing there for another hour.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Bailey, from Lancaster, has since shown the book to the Richard III Society and it is currently being assessed by the Yorkshire Museum.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Bailey, 59, said the museum had described the book as &#8216;internationally important&#8217; and that experts from around the world are keen to look at it.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Bailey added: &#8216;They told us the engravings were definitely St Leonard and St Margaret &#8211; who were both patron saints of child birth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;In the 1400s around 40 to 60 per cent of women died in childbirth, so the owner may have prayed with this object as a kind of protection &#8211; it may have been part of a birthing girdle or a book mark for the Bible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Whoever had it commissioned must have been incredibly wealthy &#8211; there&#8217;s nothing else like it in the world. It could be worth \u00a3100,000 or more.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Julian Evan-Hart, an expert in rare treasure and editor of Treasure Hunting magazine, described it as an &#8216;exceptionally unique&#8217; historical artefact.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8216;The book is dated between 1280 and 1410 when sumptuary law made it illegal for anyone other than the nobility to carry gold.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Automatically, then, it would have been the possession of someone highly notable such as a member of royalty.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The artwork is clearly iconographic and bears a close resemblance to the Middleham Jewel &#8211; there is every possibility that it was made by the same artist.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The Middleham Jewel was a gold pendant set with a 10 carat blue sapphire stone, which symbolised the Virgin Mary, and engraved with a depiction of the Nativity and the faces of 15 saints.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/11\/05\/00\/50084759-10167833-image-a-70_1636073982533.jpg\" height=\"845\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Mrs Bailey has since shown the book to the Richard III Society and it is currently being assessed by the Yorkshire Museum<\/p>\n<p>It is thought to have belonged to either Richard III&#8217;s wife, Anne Neville, his mother Cecily Neville, or his sister-in-law Anne Beauchamp.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Lewis, a specialist at the Richard III Society has seen the book.
