{"id":144110,"date":"2021-11-09T13:40:59","date_gmt":"2021-11-09T13:40:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/precoinnews.com\/?p=144110"},"modified":"2021-11-09T13:40:59","modified_gmt":"2021-11-09T13:40:59","slug":"green-brighton-council-leader-sorry-for-flying-460miles-to-cop26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/precoinnews.com\/world-news\/green-brighton-council-leader-sorry-for-flying-460miles-to-cop26\/","title":{"rendered":"Green Brighton council leader sorry for FLYING 460miles to COP26"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Green leader of Brighton council is facing calls to quit after FLYING the 460miles from Gatwick to Glasgow to protest against climate change at COP26 summit<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Councillor Phelim Mac Cafferty, Brighton and Hove City Council, took jet<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>News of the flight to COP26 sparked calls for him to stand down from role<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cllr Mac Cafferty said he made &#8216;failure of judgement&#8217; and would get train back<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A Green council leader has apologised for a &#8216;major failure of judgement&#8217; after flying from Brighton to COP26 &#8211; hours after criticising the government over climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Phelim Mac Cafferty, the leader of Brighton and Hove City Council&#8217;s Green group said he took the one hour and 20 minute jet because he was worried about trains being delayed.<\/p>\n<p>After completing his\u00a0 460-mile journey, Cllr Mac Cafferty made a speech on cutting carbon emissions and appeared at a protest march, led by Greta Thunberg, calling for world leaders to stop temperatures rising.<\/p>\n<p>The politician, who co-chairs BHCC carbon neutral working group, yesterday admitted the blunder.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Mac Cafferty, leader of the Green Party which controls the council, unreservedly apologised, saying he had been worried his train might be cancelled.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8216;In the Friday evening just gone, I took a flight from London to Glasgow to attend COP26 where I had been invited to represent the city at a presentation of the Glasgow Declaration on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;This decision to fly was a major failure of my judgement which goes against my political group&#8217;s pledges and principles and I unreservedly apologise.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/11\/09\/12\/50253763-10181705-image-a-35_1636461472154.jpg\" height=\"951\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Councillor Phelim Mac Cafferty, Brighton and Hove City Council, took jet to COP26<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/11\/09\/12\/50253877-10181705-image-a-36_1636461479587.jpg\" height=\"845\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>He then appeared at a protest march, led by Greta Thunberg, during his visit to Scotland<\/p>\n<p>Conservative councillor Dawn Barnett told the Brighton Argus he was a &#8216;hypocrite&#8217; and called on the Greens to relinquish control of the city council<\/p>\n<p>She added: &#8216;Well I think it is absolutely disgusting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;He stands there preaching and bleaching and saying what we should do but he doesn&#8217;t follow the rules. It is very hypocritical of him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I would like to see the Greens step down as a party.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The blunder comes just days after Cllr Mac Cafferty claimed Brighton and Hove was leading the way on climate and social action.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Mac Cafferty said he had been concerned about the reliability of the rail network which left people struggling to get to COP26.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of last month, operators from the east and west coast mainlines advised against people travelling from London to Glasgow amid stormy weather across the UK.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/11\/09\/12\/50253881-10181705-image-a-37_1636461492646.jpg\" height=\"845\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The march the politician attended called for world leaders to stop temperatures rising<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Mac Cafferty added: &#8216;I reluctantly took this very difficult decision because I was concerned about the unreliability of the rail network following the well-publicised difficulties experienced by many people wanting to travel by train to Glasgow the week before, when trains were cancelled.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I was concerned that this would happen again and I felt it was important not to miss the opportunity to attend the important presentation on behalf of the city, lobby world leaders and share with others the innovative work taking place in Brighton and Hove.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I paid for my own transport and all associated costs. I am not getting paid for any of the speeches I am making or meetings I am attending and I am otherwise working from Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Transport contributes a large portion of carbon emissions, all significant journeys we make have an effect on our climate. I will be offsetting the carbon cost of my journey.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I will be taking my return journey on train.
