Former Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre was made editor-in-chief of the newspaper\u2019s publisher DMG Media yesterday.<\/p>\n
Mr Dacre, who edited the title for 26 years, will take an active role advising Lord Rothermere, the company\u2019s owner and chairman, and its editors.<\/p>\n
Lord Rothermere said: \u2018I am delighted to announce that Paul Dacre, who has a huge and distinguished history with this company, is being appointed editor-in-chief of DMG Media.<\/p>\n
\u2018Although he will not be involved in day-to-day editing, he will be taking an active role advising me and the editors.\u2019<\/p>\n

As Fleet Street\u2019s longest serving editor \u2013 at the Evening Standard from 1991 before taking the helm at the Daily Mail in 1992 \u2013 Mr Dacre\u2019s stewardship saw the Daily Mail win Newspaper of the Year seven times<\/p>\n

He famously published a landmark front page declaring five men accused of killing teenager Stephen Lawrence were \u2018murderers\u2019, won justice for the Omagh bomb victims and led the way campaigning to banish the scourge of plastic bags.<\/p>\n
The latter earned the newspaper plaudits from the head of the UN\u2019s environment programme.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month Mr Dacre pulled out of the running to be chairman of media regulator Ofcom with a stinging attack on the civil service.<\/p>\n
In a letter to The Times, he wrote that anyone with Right-of-centre views would \u2018have more chance of winning the lottery than getting the job\u2019.<\/p>\n
It was announced last week that Ted Verity, who has edited the Mail on Sunday since 2018, was becoming editor of the Daily Mail as well.<\/p>\n
