{"id":146545,"date":"2021-12-03T21:27:10","date_gmt":"2021-12-03T21:27:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/precoinnews.com\/?p=146545"},"modified":"2021-12-03T21:27:10","modified_gmt":"2021-12-03T21:27:10","slug":"edward-snowden-says-gamers-could-be-vulnerable-to-exploitation-using-nfts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/precoinnews.com\/crypto\/edward-snowden-says-gamers-could-be-vulnerable-to-exploitation-using-nfts\/","title":{"rendered":"Edward Snowden says gamers could be vulnerable to exploitation using NFTs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden said he was concerned with how some privileged individuals or firms in the digital space might be able to use nonfungible tokens, or NFTs, in the gaming industry.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood at the BlockDown DeData online conference on Friday, Snowden said though he had seen some use cases for nonfungible tokens to raise funds for causes, he is concerned with the technology \u201ccreeping into gaming.\u201d The whistleblower described certain aspects of the metaverse as \u201chorrible, and heinous, and tragic\u201d for aiming at capitalizing on users\u2019 virtual escapes. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have people that are trying to [inject] an artificial sense of scarcity into a post-scarcity domain,\u201d said Snowden. \u201cI think the community should very much be trying to bend the arc of development away from injecting artificial, unnecessary scarcity entirely for the benefit of some investor class.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2021-12\/f5ddad70-3bb4-416f-9224-6a45ffccda2a.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Wood seemed to disagree with Snowden\u2019s claims regarding NFTs in gaming, equating virtual artifacts within games to artists selling NFTs of their own music. However, Snowden countered that gamers were \u201cnot paying for a guaranteed product\u201d but rather purchasing the \u201cchance at something, without the promise of something,\u201d leaving the space open to exploitation. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have any issue with game developers restricting access to their product in the same way that they already have for decades before,\u201d said Wood. \u201cI see NFTs as a more agile way of restricting access to their product.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Snowden\u2019s and Wood\u2019s comments come as gaming firms seem to be casting a wider net for adoption of digital assets and NFTs. Andrew Wilson, CEO of major video game company Electronic Arts, said in November that NFTs and play-to-earn games are the future of the industry. There seems to be interest from users as well \u2014 on Wednesday, the NFT game Guild of Guardians announced it had sold more than $5 million of its native tokens in advance of its Q1 2022 launch.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Bitcoin got stronger despite government crackdowns, says Edward Snowden<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking from Russia where he has been in exile since 2013, Snowden has continued to give interviews and express his opinions on Bitcoin (BTC) and the crypto space.
