professional rugby player who throttled his girlfriend and pulled a knife on her during an abusive relationship has been jailed for three years.<\/p>\n<p> Daniel Igbinedion, 26, dragged insurance broker Katy Lyles,\u00a035, out of a club and tore off her SmartWatch so she couldn&#8217;t dial 999 before threatening her with a blade.<\/p>\n<p>The 6ft 2inch, 16-stone prop forward, who was on the books at Oldham Roughyeds, Dewsbury Rams and Featherstone Rovers, met the woman when he started as a personal trainer at Nuffield Gym in, Shipley, West Yorkshire, which was opposite her workplace.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the rugby league ace was &#8216;possessive and jealous&#8217; from the early stages of the two-year relationship, Bradford Crown Court heard.<\/p>\n<p>After a night out in Leeds jealous Igbinedion attacked Ms Lyles at his home in Bingley where he &#8216;kept her prisoner&#8217; and strangled her with both hands around her neck, leaving her unable to breathe and fearful for her life, the court was told.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Igbinedion was found guilty in October of controlling and coercive behaviour and three separate charges of assault against the woman between May 2018 and March 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Andrew Hatton said Igbinedion had accused the woman of being disrespectful to him and it was clear that he felt himself to be &#8216;somewhat different&#8217; to everybody else.<\/p>\n<p>The court heard the woman was in a sense under Igbinedion&#8217;s spell and the relationship continued despite her seeing a deeply unpleasant side of him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Judge Hatton jailed\u00a0Igbinedion for three years and\u00a0made him subject to a five-year restraining order which bans him from contacting the complainant directly or indirectly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/12\/21\/15\/52066655-10332849-image-a-4_1640099210107.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0was &#8216;possessive and jealous&#8217; from the early stages of the two-year relationship, Bradford Crown Court heard<\/p>\n<p>The court had heard how,\u00a0after she dressed up for a Christmas party in Liverpool in December 2018, Igbinedion called\u00a0Ms Lyles\u00a0a &#8216;sl*g&#8217; and she spent the rest of the night wearing a coat over her outfit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The judge said: &#8216;Others tried to persuade her to remove her coat but she kept it on because she was under your control.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>On the same night Igbinedion carried her out of a bar before dragging her through the streets by the arm until a concerned doorman intervened.<\/p>\n<p>Igbinedion spent a night in a police cell over that incident but was not prosecuted and the relationship resumed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/12\/21\/15\/52066645-10332849-image-m-3_1640099160992.jpg\" height=\"667\" width=\"306\"><\/p>\n<p>Daniel Igbinedion, 26, dragged Katy Lyles out of a club and tore off her SmartWatch so she couldn&#8217;t dial 999 before threatening her with a knife<\/p>\n<p>The court heard how on other occasions Igbinedion drove erratically and aggressively pursuing his victim&#8217;s car and his abusive behaviour led to her threatening to kill herself.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Hatton said Igbinedion had &#8216;drained all the life and resistance out of her&#8217; and he had driven her to that state of mind.<\/p>\n<p>In a victim impact statement she described how she now suffered flashbacks, anxiety and sleepless nights.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance broker Ms Lyles previously told the court: &#8216;He tried to kill me. He tried to strangle me. Daniel pointed a knife at me.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The court heard that Igbinedion had suffered from mental health issues and had been sectioned at one stage.<\/p>\n<p>But in a letter to Judge Hatton he said he had now undertaken an anger management course while remanded in custody.<\/p>\n<p>In his letter Igbinedion said he was genuinely sorry and his barrister Chloe Birch said he now faced the end of his professional sporting career.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Birch said: &#8216;That to somebody of Mr Igbinedion&#8217;s talent and potential will be a significant punishment.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Jailing Igbinedion for three years and three months Judge Hatton said: &#8216;I have to deal with you for this sustained course of conduct including gross offences of violence against a background of controlling and coercive behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;This whole catalogue of offending was so serious that only a custodial sentence can be justified for it.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>He said the woman had given her evidence at the trial with dignity and in a &#8216;compelling and impressive&#8217;
