{"id":148640,"date":"2021-12-31T12:02:26","date_gmt":"2021-12-31T12:02:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/precoinnews.com\/?p=148640"},"modified":"2021-12-31T12:02:26","modified_gmt":"2021-12-31T12:02:26","slug":"former-top-general-says-ecstasy-could-be-used-to-treat-troops-ptsd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/precoinnews.com\/world-news\/former-top-general-says-ecstasy-could-be-used-to-treat-troops-ptsd\/","title":{"rendered":"Former top general says ecstasy could be used to treat troops&apos; PTSD"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Traumatised troops could be helped by taking ECSTASY: Dance drug was a success in trial on US veterans suffering from combat-related anxiety, former military chief says<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A former top general believes ecstasy could treat troops suffering severe PTSD<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>GDeneral Sir Nick Carter retired last month as Chief of the Defence Staff\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>He said researchers in the United States have been studying the drug&#8217;s benefits\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Early results suggest the drug could be prescribed to soldiers as soon as 2023<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The\u00a0former chief of the Armed Forces has highlighted research into the illegal drug ecstasy to treat anxiety disorders caused by combat.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday\u2019s edition of the BBC\u2019s Today programme on Radio 4 was guest-edited by General Sir Nick Carter, who retired last month as Chief of the Defence Staff.<\/p>\n<p>Listeners were told Sir Nick wanted Today to showcase the banned drug\u2019s apparently positive effects on traumatised troops.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/12\/30\/21\/52385897-0-image-m-27_1640898784623.jpg\" height=\"837\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>General Sir Nick Carter said he wants officials to consider whether ecstasy could be used to treat traumatised troops suffering from PTSD<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/12\/30\/21\/52386637-0-image-a-28_1640900006388.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Research in the United States suggests ecstasy could be effective in treating soldiers suffering PTSD, picture posed by model<\/p>\n<p>Ecstasy remains a Class A drug in Britain because it is blamed for the deaths of hundreds of mainly young people from seizures and high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently possessing ecstasy or MDMA, as it is also known, can carry a seven-year jail sentence while dealing the drug can lead to a life sentence. But early research in the US into the drug\u2019s efficacy in treating conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder has been so encouraging that it could be prescribed to soldiers from 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Radio 4\u2019s Today featured interviews with US veterans who said MDMA had helped them rationalise battlefield trauma. British trials into MDMA-assisted psychotherapy are expected to start in early 2022 at King\u2019s College London, the Daily Mail has confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>Already researchers have found that MDMA releases hormones such as oxytocin and alters patterns of brain activity.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, it was found to reduce activity in parts of the brain where memories are processed. MDMA also allowed veterans to more easily rationalise recollections of traumatic moments which would otherwise be \u2018stuck\u2019 in the heads.<\/p>\n<p>The drug was administered in combination with intensive therapy sessions.<\/p>\n<p>A US veteran told Today: \u2018I was in Vietnam in 1968-69 and suffered for more than 50 years before joining this research. I was suffering from a lot of anger but I could finally release it. MDMA and the therapy calmed me down and I gained a tool kit for fixing negativity.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Last night, Dr James Rucker, a consultant psychiatrist at King\u2019s College London, said: \u2018PTSD can be a life altering and extremely debilitating illness.
