The Met Office is telling the county to prepare for widespread disruption on Friday as dense fog looks set to lead to delays on the morning commute.

The national forecaster has issued a yellow warning for fog covering a large area in the south of England, the Midlands, and the south of Wales – including the cities of Bristol, Oxford and Birmingham.

The warning reads: "Fog patches will form during the evening and then become more widespread overnight – perhaps leading to some travel disruption."

They advise that this could mean "slower journey times with delays to bus and train services possible", with an additional chance of delays or cancellations to flights.

Weatherman Tomasz Schafernaker from the BBC meanwhile advised motorists to "take it steady" on treacherous foggy roads, and expected some mist also in the northwest of England.

Temperatures are expected to remain close to average for January for the rest of the UK on Friday, but it will remain cold in foggy areas.

Northern Ireland and Scotland will see some cloud, while light rain will come to areas in the far north.

Saturday will generally begin partly cloudy, with some sunny spells emerging by the afternoon and some light showers in the west.

Anyone preparing for rain there might want to be extra careful after new research found that umbrellas are one of the nation’s most lost items.

A 'find the brolly' brain teaser was commissioned by Premier Inn to promote the new umbrella rental trial in 30 of its hotels — launched in partnership with DripDrop — with a minimum of 15% of the proceeds going to the hotel chain's partner, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

The hotel chain found that 10% of Brits will lose or break a staggering ten or more umbrellas in their lifetime.
