Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) delivered an impassioned, deeply emotional plea to his colleagues in Congress on Tuesday after a shooter killed 14 elementary school children and a teacher in Uvalde, Texas. “Why do you spend all this time running for the United States Senate, why do you go through all the hassle of getting this job, of putting yourself in a position of authority, if your answer, is as the slaughter increases, as our kids run for their lives, we do nothing?” Murphy asked. “What are we doing, why are you here, if not to solve a problem as existential as this?”

The shooting came barely a week after 10 were killed at a Buffalo supermarket. “Mr. President, the 14 kids dead in an elementary school in Texas right now,” he said, taking a deep pause. “What are we doing? What are we doing? Just days after a shooter walked into a grocery store to gun down African American patrons we have another Sandy Hook on our hands.”

Twenty-six people, including 20 children, were killed by a gunman in an elementary school in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, a month after Murphy was elected to represent the state in the Senate. Republicans have since worked to stonewall attempts to enact gun control legislation in the United States.
