Treasure hunters have been flocking to a drought-ridden lake in the US currently filled to less than 30 per cent of its capacity in the hopes of uncovering spoils.

Since May the body of four suspected mobsters have been found decomposing in Lake Mead dating back to the 1970s.

Several of them were found carrying gunshot wounds to the head in suspected mob executions.

Treasure hunters are also hoping to find ghost towns and the buried loot of a notorious gangster.

Located 20 miles outside of Las Vegas, it’s no surprise that the lake has a few nefarious surprises in it, such was the influence of the Chicago mob in the 1970s.

Experts believe that one of the bodies found in the barrels belongs to a man named Johnny Pappas.

Pappas disappeared in 1976 and the man suspected of killing him was notorious mobster Tony Spilotro- a man who went on to inspire Joe Pesci's character in the iconic film Casino.

And speaking to the Daily Mail, former National Park Service official Travis Heggie warned he expected people to find far more grim things.

He said: “This is just the tip of the iceberg.

“I'm expecting all sorts of criminal things to show up — and I mean a lot.”

Indeed, two former police officers have even offered a $5,000 reward to anyone who discovers more sunken barrels as they believe there might be gold in them.

It has long been rumoured that the missing loot of Bugsy Siegel was sunken in the lake.

Siegel was one of Las Vegas’ richest men before his murder in 1947 and it’s thought he sunk his fortune in the lake.
