And enquiries to the NHS 111 helpline are approaching an all-time high, with worried parents seeking advice on the Strep A outbreak raging through schools.<\/p>\n<p>Saffron Cordery, chief executive of NHS Providers, said: &#8216;Trust leaders are expecting this Christmas to be one of their darkest to date.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2022\/12\/22\/22\/65866539-11567657-image-a-72_1671748446811.jpg\" height=\"425\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Britons were last night urged not to mix with loved ones if they feel unwell over Christmas to avoid passing on illnesses and overwhelming the NHS\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And Dr Mary Ramsay, a director at the UK Health Security Agency, said eligible adults should get their flu and Covid jabs.<\/p>\n<p>She added: &#8216;Both Covid-19 and flu can cause severe illness or even death for those most vulnerable in our communities, and so it is also important to avoid contact with other people if you are unwell in order to help stop infections spreading over the Christmas and new year period.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>There are fears that patients who delayed seeking care when nurses and ambulance staff picketed this week will now scramble to be seen. However, there are likely to be fewer staff available to deal with the influx as hospitals operate stripped back weekend and Christmas Day rotas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New figures released yesterday showed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>The number of patients in hospital with flu in England surged by 67 per cent in a week \u2013 a 60-fold rise on the same time last year;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>An average of 13,697 hospital beds per day last week in England were occupied by patients ready to be discharged \u2013 28 per cent higher than a year ago;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>A quarter of patients in England waited more than an hour to be handed to A&amp;E teams by ambulance crews last week;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>The number of Covid-19 hospital cases in England rose to its highest level in almost two months;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>There were 721,301 calls to 111 services last week, up almost 60 per cent on the same week last year;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>100,101 general and acute hospital beds were open last week \u2013 up from 90,621 this time last year \u2013 but around 19 in 20 of them were full;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Five more children in England have died from the invasive Strep A infection, taking the total in the current outbreak to 21;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>The proportion of GP appointments held face-to-face has fallen for the first time in ten months, to 69.1 per cent, with around three in ten conducted remotely<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mrs Cordery added: &#8216;After very few flu cases in the last two years, in part due to social distancing during the pandemic, this flu season is looking far more severe compared to recent years. There has also been a surge in the number of flu patients in critical care beds, with the daily average standing at 149 last week.<\/p>\n<p>At the equivalent point last year, the NHS had only two flu patients a day in critical care and 32 in general beds. One in four ambulance patients in England \u2013 16,379 in total \u2013 waited more than an hour to be handed to A&amp;E teams last week thanks to a combination of bed shortages and increased demand.<\/p>\n<p>Some four in ten patients \u2013 28,105 \u2013 had to wait at least 30 minutes to be transferred. Meanwhile, there were 721,301 calls to NHS 111 services last week, up from 706,129 the week before.<\/p>\n<p>NHS England said this was &#8216;near-record&#8217; level, up almost 60 per cent from the 452,644 calls in the equivalent week in 2021. The rise in demand is understood to be partly driven by parents concerned about symptoms of Strep A. Meanwhile, the number of Covid cases in England&#8217;s hospitals hit 8,643 \u2013 the highest since October 28.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Sir Stephen Powis, NHS national medical director, said: &#8216;It is clear the NHS is facing enormous pressure ahead of Christmas.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Leyla Hannbeck, chief executive of the Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies, said chemists are facing &#8216;unbearable&#8217; levels of violence and abuse as a result of medicine shortages and health service backlogs.
