Tadros&#8217; ten-year-old son was pulled from the wreckage and is in a critical condition in hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Two other people on board \u2013 Winnie De Silva, 33, and nine-year-old Leon \u2013 were also hospitalised. Of the six occupants in the other helicopter, flown by Michael James, five suffered minor injuries while one left the scene unscathed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We are deeply saddened and still in a state of shock from the events that unfolded on Monday,&#8217; Mr and Mrs Hughes&#8217; family told the Liverpool Echo in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Ron and Diane arrived last week, visiting our family on the Gold Coast after being separated by Covid for the last few years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;They were the most generous, loyal, fun-loving couple who had a zest for life and were loved and adored by everyone they met.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Tragedies like this happen to &#8216;other people&#8217; and we are all struggling to come to terms with our loss.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;They leave a huge hole in our family and will be survived by parents, brothers, sons, daughters, and their cheeky grandkids.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The family thanked the first responders, emergency services and Sea World staff for their efforts to save the couple.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/01\/05\/14\/66231133-11602713-image-a-3_1672929698644.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The family thanked the first responders, emergency services and Sea World staff for their efforts to save the couple. We are truly humbled at this heartbreaking time.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The fatal crash occurred just 20 seconds after the lower aircraft took off and the two Eurocopter EC130s collided around 250ft off the ground.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/01\/05\/14\/66191629-11602713-Gold_Coast_pilot_Ash_Jenkinson_is_being_remembered_as_hero_follo-a-4_1672929782276.jpg\" height=\"722\" width=\"632\"><\/p>\n<p>Mr and Mrs Hughes, from Neston, Cheshire, were killed alongside British pilot Ash Jenkinson, 40, (pictured) and Sydney mother Vanessa Tadros, 36<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/01\/04\/01\/66173891-11596247-image-a-20_1672795114342.jpg\" height=\"438\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Vanessa Tadros (left) was killed instantly in the helicopter crash, but her son Nicholas (right) survived and is in hospital in a critical condition\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the first chopper gained altitude, it smashed into the second aircraft, which appeared to be descending.<\/p>\n<p>The churning rotors of the first helicopter ripped into the cabin of the second one, shattering its glass cockpit just inches from the pilot and passengers inside.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses said they saw a terrifying cloud of broken glass and debris explode as the two aircraft ploughed into each other in mid-air.<\/p>\n<p>The devastating force of the collision ripped the rotor unit and gearbox from the lower chopper, immediately sending it hopelessly tumbling out of control.<\/p>\n<p>It spun upside down and plummeted to the ground below, smashing into a sandbar, killing the pilot, Mr and Mrs Hughes and Ms Tadros on impact.<\/p>\n<p>Mr James meanwhile managed to land his aircraft upright on a sandbar between Sea World and Gold Coast&#8217;s popular Broadwater beach. It meant that five of the six occupants of his helicopter\u00a0minor injuries while one left the scene unscathed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/01\/04\/14\/66191537-11597253-image-a-1_1672843934431.jpg\" height=\"534\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Winne and Leon de Silva (pictured) were rushed to hospital with critical injuries. They have both since stabilised\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Sea World pilot has been hailed a &#8216;hero&#8217; for saving the lives of his five passengers\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0couples Riaan and Elmarie Steenberg, and Marle and Edward Swart, and a tourist from Western Australia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The forensic crash unit is investigating the incident with help from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: &#8216;We are supporting the family of two British nationals who died in Australia and are in contact with the local authorities.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, said his thoughts were with those affected by the incident.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Australia is shocked by the news of the terrible and tragic helicopter incident today on the Gold Coast,&#8217; he said in a tweet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;My thoughts are with all those affected, including first responders, and my deepest sympathies are with those who are grieving.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk tweeted it was an &#8216;unthinkable tragedy&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>She said: &#8216;My deepest sympathies are with each of the families and everyone affected by this terrible accident.&#8217;<\/p>\n<h3>SEA WORLD HELICOPTERS&#8217; 40 YEARS OF &#8216;IMPECCABLE SAFETY&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p><span>Sea World Helicopters is an independent offshoot of the theme park close to Gold Coast&#8217;s world famous Surfers Paradise, and has operated for more than 40 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><\/span><span>I<\/span>n November 2019 it opened Australia&#8217;s largest privately-owned multi-million dollar helicopter terminal overlooking Broadwater<span>.<\/span><span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It bragged of its &#8216;impeccable&#8217; safety record which it attributed to its &#8216;experienced pilots and meticulous maintenance regime&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><span>Prior to Covid hitting the tourist industry, the terminal flew up to 600 passengers a day, offering five minute scenic flights or 30 minute trips to hinterland waterfalls and coastal beaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the pandemic, the firm diversified with trips to local wineries\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Chief pilot Ash Jenkinson, 40, who was killed in the tragedy, said the flights offered a once in a lifetime experience to holidaymakers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Day trips flying around to several wineries, who doesn&#8217;t want to do that?&#8217; he said in 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8216;The Gold Coast is so well known for its golden sands and beach lifestyle, you forget that only a five-minute flight inland you have all these beautiful Hinterland rainforests and massive flyable waterfalls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It&#8217;s something our guests will remember for a lifetime and one of my favourite locations in Australia.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><span>He added: &#8216;If you haven&#8217;t seen the Gold Coast from the air, you&#8217;re missing out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span>&#8216;The simple flight up and down the coastline, flying past the tall buildings and above the sea, is something you can&#8217;t grasp from the ground.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11602713\/British-couple-killed-Australia-chopper-crash-visiting-relatives-not-seen-years.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read Full Article<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>British couple killed in Australian chopper crash<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":169205,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[23056],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.7 -
