Terrified airline passengers dived for cover as their plane was caught in a deadly crossfire at the Culiac\u00e1n International Airport in Sinaloa during the police operation to arrest Ovidio Guzm\u00e1n \u2013 son of notorious drug kingpin Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzm\u00e1n .<\/p>\n
One passenger told the New York Post: \u201cAs we were accelerating for take-off, we heard gunshots very close to the plane, and that\u2019s when we all threw ourselves to the floor\u201d.<\/p>\n
Members of the Sinaloa drug cartel reportedly fired at two aircraft, a Boeing 737-800 operated by the Mexican Air Force and civilian Embraer E190 operated by Aeromexico Connect.<\/p>\n

Social media reports from passengers trapped on the civilian airliner reported seeing military aircraft landing<\/p>\n
No injuries were reported, said Aeromexico, which temporarily cancelled all of its flights to and from the Sinaloan cities of Culiacan, Los Mochis and Mazatlan.<\/p>\n
Culiac\u00e1n International Airport closed shortly after Guzm\u00e1n\u2019s arrest for security reasons, according to an announcement on the airport\u2019s official Twitter account.<\/p>\n

A statement from airport authorities read: \u201c\u201cThis morning, we detected a bullet hole in the fuselage of an Embraer E190 aircraft that was ready to operate the flight AM165 on the route Culiac\u00e1n-Mexico City. The flight was cancelled for safety reasons.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe plane never began its departure. After this incident, all safety protocols were activated, we informed the authorities, with whom we will coordinate the investigations. The clients and employees are safe.\u201d<\/p>\n
The northern city of Culiac\u00e1n has been in total uproar since the dramatic operation to capture Guzm\u00e1n.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey caught him at about 4am, and since then the shooting hasn\u2019t stopped,\u201d one local told The Guardian. \u201cIt\u2019s been a real mess \u2013 they\u2019re shooting up in the air trying to bring down the [police] helicopters. The whole town is a mess\u201d.<\/p>\n
At least three members of the security forces had been killed in the clashes, according to a statement from the Sinaloa state government.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe continue to work on controlling the situation,\u201d said Cristobal Castaneda, Sinaloa\u2019s public security chief.<\/p>\n
