It was the highest since comparable data started being collected in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>Rocketing inflation drove interest payments on the state&#8217;s \u00a32.5trillion debt mountain to \u00a317.3billion, another grim record.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Around \u00a37billion in spending on energy support schemes was partly offset by a rise in tax revenues.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/01\/24\/08\/66899959-11669737-image-m-35_1674547419807.jpg\" height=\"445\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Another \u00a327.4billion of borrowing was racked up last month &#8211; \u00a316.7billion more than the same month in 2021. It was the highest since comparable data started being collected in 1993.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/01\/24\/07\/66899629-11669737-image-a-25_1674546622742.jpg\" height=\"427\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Rocketing inflation drove interest payments on the state&#8217;s \u00a32.5trillion debt mountain to \u00a317.3billion, another grim record<\/p>\n<p>Rishi Sunak and Mr Hunt have been under mounting pressure from Conservatives to bring forward tax cuts to boost the economy and ease pressure on Brits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the Treasury has all-but ruled out that happening at the Budget in March, and the Chancellor said this morning: &#8216;Right now we are helping millions of families with the cost of living, but we must also ensure that our level of debt is fair for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We have already taken some tough decisions to get debt falling, and it is vital that we stick to this plan so we can halve inflation this year and get growth going again \u2013 creating better paid jobs across the country.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/01\/24\/07\/66899647-11669737-image-a-26_1674546626534.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Hunt warned of the need to get government debt falling as another \u00a327.4billion of liabilities were racked up last month<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/01\/24\/08\/66899965-11669737-image-a-42_1674547799643.jpg\" height=\"368\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Resolution Foundation economist Felicia Odamtten said: &#8216;Glimmers of good economic news have yet to show themselves in the public finances, with borrowing significantly higher than expected in December.
