More needs to be done to protect and support the survivors of these behaviours.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Jemima Olchawski, CEO of the Fawcett Society, a women&#8217;s rights charity, said women were &#8216;at their most vulnerable&#8217; with NHS staff.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/05\/22\/00\/70152043-12109281-At_least_2_088_rapes_and_4_451_sexual_assaults_were_reported_in_-a-63_1684713578309.jpg\" height=\"415\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>At least 2,088 rapes and 4,451 sexual assaults were reported in hospitals between January 2019 and October 2022 [Stock photo]<\/p>\n<p>Daisy Cooper, the Liberal Democrat health spokeswoman, said that all patients should feel safe but these &#8216;shocking findings show that this is simply not the case&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Health Secretary Steve Barclay held a meeting with NHS chiefs in April after it was revealed that\u00a0at least 2,088 rapes and 4,451 sexual assaults were reported in hospitals between January 2019 and October 2022 \u2013 a rate of 33 a week.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Barclay has asked the NHS to explore improving the quality of the data on sexual incidents and work with the police to ensure proper action is taken.<\/p>\n<p>Artificial intelligence could potentially be used to better identify trends.<\/p>\n<p>He expects employers to be &#8216;proactive&#8217; and improve the culture in NHS settings.<\/p>\n<h3>Read more:\u00a0Steve Barclay vows to halt horror of sex attacks in hospitals: Health Secretary calls urgent meeting with NHS chiefs following revelation that dozens of patients are raped and sexually assaulted every week\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/05\/22\/00\/70152041-12109281-Health_Secretary_Steve_Barclay_giving_a_statement_to_MPs_in_the_-a-62_1684713568810.jpg\" height=\"183\" width=\"274\"><\/p>\n<p>Health Secretary Steve Barclay giving a statement to MPs in the House of Commons<\/p>\n<p>But a recent study revealed that just five Trusts across 213 surveyed in England had staff training tailored directly to sexual harassment in some form.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at the University of Cambridge analysed data from Freedom of Information (FOI) requests sent to 213 NHS Trusts in England.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 199 that responded, only 35 said they offered &#8216;active bystander&#8217; training, which encourages individuals to recognise and respond to poor behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>A number of NHS Trusts have admitted issuing NDAs or confidentiality agreements while resolving sexual harassment cases in the period between 2017 and 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While use of the gagging orders on whistleblowers has been banned, NDAs can still be used in other situations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Professor Julia Macfarlane, from the campaign group Can&#8217;t Buy My Silence, said there was &#8216;no justification&#8217; for covering up sexual misconduct in the NHS.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Sadly this information is consistent with the widespread use of NDAs through all our workplaces and institutions. It has to stop.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An NHS spokesman said: &#8216;Sexual misconduct, violence, harassment and abuse are criminal acts.
