{"id":179512,"date":"2023-08-03T17:31:17","date_gmt":"2023-08-03T17:31:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/precoinnews.com\/?p=179512"},"modified":"2023-08-03T17:31:17","modified_gmt":"2023-08-03T17:31:17","slug":"adidass-sale-of-yeezy-sneakers-brings-in-400-million-euros","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/precoinnews.com\/business\/adidass-sale-of-yeezy-sneakers-brings-in-400-million-euros\/","title":{"rendered":"Adidas\u2019s Sale of Yeezy Sneakers Brings in 400 Million Euros"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span>The News<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Adidas took in 400 million euros (about $437 million) in sales of Yeezy sneakers last quarter as the company began liquidating the inventory left behind when it ended its relationship with Kanye West, the rapper known as Ye.<\/p>\n<p>Amid mounting public pressure, the sportswear company ended its partnership with Ye in October after the rapper made a string of antisemitic remarks.<\/p>\n<p>As part of a pledge, Adidas has already donated \u20ac110 million of the proceeds to organizations that counter hate and antisemitism, and has pledged an additional \u20ac100 million, the company said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2023\/08\/03\/multimedia\/03adidas-yeezy-hmjz\/03adidas-yeezy-hmjz-articleLarge.jpg\"><\/p>\n<h2><span>The Numbers: Yeezy\u2019s impact on Adidas\u2019s bottom line.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Yeezy sales added \u20ac150 million to Adidas\u2019s operating profit for the first half the year, \u201can incremental amount,\u201d the sportswear maker said.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s partly because the revenue amounted to roughly half of the \u20ac800 million that Adidas took in from the Yeezy gear in the first half of 2022. And Adidas reported a steeply lower operating profit for the half-year: \u20ac236 million, versus \u20ac828 million a year earlier. Adidas blamed the 70 percent drop on one-time expenses for a strategic review, \u201cas well as the donations and accruals for further donations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company declined to forecast how much more money the ongoing effort to shed the Yeezy gear could generate.<\/p>\n<p>Adidas began selling its first batch of its remaining Yeezy shoe models in June. They sold out within several weeks, the company said.<\/p>\n<p>The sale was a step toward resolving a $1.3 billion inventory headache that had plagued the company since it dropped its collaboration with Ye. And the revenue total was a sign that the shoe line, which had previously been hugely profitable for Adidas, remained popular despite the furor over the rapper\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sale of the first part of the Yeezy inventory did of course help both our top and bottom line in the quarter,\u201d Bjorn Gulden, the company\u2019s chief executive, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Although Adidas no longer has a contract with Ye, the company said it was honoring all remaining legal obligations. But Mr. Gulden refused to elaborate on how much the rapper was making from the sales. Ye and Adidas are continuing legal discussions, Mr. Gulden said.<\/p>\n<h2><span>How the Sale Works: More models coming in August.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A second batch of Yeezy sneakers and slides hit the market this week, and sales of the remaining inventory will continue to be released this year, as the company pushes \u201cto get rid of it,\u201d Mr. Gulden said.<\/p>\n<p>He refused to speculate on how much would be generated by the next batch, which includes some of the most popular designs, such as the Yeezy Boost 350 V2, 500 and 700, as well as the Yeezy Slide and Foam Runner.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the most popular styles \u2014 and most valuable among collectors \u2014 were sold off in the first release, which amounted to roughly a quarter of all pairs that had been stuck in warehouses, he said. Remaining models might not bring in as much, given their lesser value.<\/p>\n<h2><span>What Happens Next: More donations to come.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Adidas said it has set aside \u20ac110 million of its proceeds from the first sale of the Yeezy inventory to donate to organizations. The donation is not a percentage of the sales, but an amount that the company said reflected \u201cthe value that we think we should donate after the conversations we have had,\u201d Mr. Gulden said.<\/p>\n<p>Among the groups receiving donations so far have been the Anti-Defamation League, the European Jewish Association and the Philonise &amp; Keeta Floyd Institute for Social Change, which is run by Philonise Floyd, the brother of George Floyd.<\/p>\n<p>The sportswear company has also been speaking with Robert K. Kraft, the billionaire owner of the New England Patriots, who has created a foundation to fight antisemitic rhetoric.
