&#8211; leading to poor value for customers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One long-distance Train Operator Company told regulators that a 2022 survey revealed around 80% of its passengers consume food and drink at the station or on the train, and of these passengers around 70% purchase at the station or on the train.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The report also states that\u00a0a response submitted by one major operating group said that &#8216;Convenience is a decisive factor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Customers are less likely to venture far from the station to obtain cheaper catering for fear of missing their train or an important service announcement unless they are familiar with the surrounding area.&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They also sent a mystery shopper out to try it for themselves &#8211; this suggested that that 11 out of the 13 outlets charged a price premium in rail compared to the high street &#8211; the premium ranged from 1% to +34%.<\/p>\n<p>Next, they calculated an average all-outlets premium for two products only, the lowest priced bottle of water on sale and a 500ml bottle of branded cola &#8211; it revealed a very similar average rail premium (compared to the high-street) of 10%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We headed out to see for ourselves, and found that almost everything was more expensive at Pret&#8217;s\u00a0High Street Kensington station branch, than its\u00a0Notting Hill high street equivalent.<\/p>\n<p>The tuna mayo and cucumber baguette is just \u00a34.25 on the high street, but \u00a34.99 in the station &#8211;
