It is &#8216;a perfect example of a bad decision to which any taxpayer would object&#8217;, Ms McVey writes. &#8216;And yet, it was allowed to happen.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>READ MORE:\u00a0ESTHER MCVEY &#8211; It&#8217;s out with the old political correctness&#8230; and in with a blast of common sense<\/h3>\n<p>She says\u00a0residents in her constituency of Tatton, Cheshire, often tell her they are &#8216;sick of having to tighten the family&#8217;s purse strings when they see public purse strings getting looser and looser&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;That&#8217;s why I&#8217;m beginning my own investigations to help root out the waste and unnecessary bureaucracy that plagues too much of the public sector,&#8217; she writes.<\/p>\n<p>Her work will be guided by three &#8216;Rs&#8217; \u2013 representation, responsiveness and reassurance. The first will mean public bodies reflect the people they serve, and has already seen her visit Scotland to encourage more people from outside London to apply for top jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Next Ms McVey says she will &#8216;unshackle&#8217; hardworking officials by stopping them worrying about how they are doing their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, she says she will give the public peace of mind that their taxes are being spent &#8216;wisely&#8217;, citing the recent axing of the second stage of the HS2 rail line in order to boost transport spending across all of northern England.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/17\/22\/79065109-12874803-image-a-14_1702851939503.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>(Pictures: The Scottish Parliament in Holyrood) Ms McVey\u00a0has already visited Scotland to encourage more people from outside London to apply for top jobs<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/17\/22\/79065111-12874803-image-a-13_1702851936829.jpg\" height=\"476\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Ms McVey says she will &#8216;unshackle&#8217; hardworking officials by stopping them worrying about how they are doing their jobs<\/p>\n<p>One of Ms McVey&#8217;s ministerial responsibilities is supporting the public bodies reform programme, which could lead to a &#8216;bonfire of the quangos&#8217; if it finds there is duplication or work that is no longer necessary.<\/p>\n<p>She may also come under pressure to look at staff activities within the Cabinet Office itself, however.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the Mail disclosed recently, it contains an 11-strong unit known as the civil service inclusive practice team, which is suspected of spreading &#8216;woke&#8217; diversity schemes across government.<\/p>\n<p>Just last month it was recruiting for an inclusive practice lead, on a salary of up to \u00a353,400 to &#8216;ensure we have excellent policies, products and advice for permanent secretary inclusion leads, departmental diversity and inclusion teams and civil service diversity networks&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>HM Treasury is still carrying out an audit of all equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) spending in government departments and quangos as part of the &#8216;war on woke&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>It is expected to call for a &#8216;presumption against&#8217; departments paying external firms and consultants for advice, as well as staff being redeployed to other priorities. Ms McVey, 56, was born in Liverpool and spent the first two years of her life in foster care.<\/p>\n<p>She was a GMTV presenter before entering politics and rose rapidly through the ministerial ranks under both David Cameron and Theresa May before quitting as work and pensions secretary over the latter&#8217;s failed Brexit deal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ms McVey founded the Blue Collar Conservative group, stood in the 2019 Tory leadership election and would have become deputy prime minister had Jeremy Hunt won last year&#8217;s contest to succeed Boris Johnson.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/17\/22\/79065385-12874803-image-a-16_1702851959033.jpg\" height=\"425\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Ms McVey with husband and fellow Tory Philip Davies has vowed she would take on the &#8216;Blob&#8217; and &#8216;put a stop to some of the nonsense that we see&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Ms McVey&#8217;s promised crackdown comes as the Department for Education prepares to publish its long-delayed guidance for schools and colleges on &#8216;gender questioning children&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>As the Mail has reported, it will not completely ban pupils adopting the names, pronouns and uniforms of the opposite sex after ministers were warned that would breach equality laws.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden indicated yesterday the draft guidelines will caution against so-called social transitioning, particularly if parents do not consent.<\/p>\n<p>He told Sky News: &#8216;At the heart of this, we need to rebalance our approach and make sure that parents are put at the heart of our approach.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We need to put all children&#8217;s safety first, and I think we need to have an appropriate scepticism about social transitioning whilst of course respecting children that are in that situation.&#8217;<\/p>\n<h2>ESTHER MCVEY: It&#8217;s out with the old political correctness&#8230; and in with a blast of common sense\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>I have become known as the &#8216;Minister for Common Sense&#8217;, and it is a moniker I&#8217;m happy to embrace. The public is crying out for more common-sense decisions across the public sector.<\/p>\n<p>I am often frustrated at hearing how our fine public institutions are hamstrung by unnecessary working practices, or are using public money in wasteful ways.<\/p>\n<p>I am committed to putting an end to it, and I know this is an issue close to the heart of readers of the Mail.<\/p>\n<p>A recent story about councils paying the heating bills of their staff who choose to work from home is a perfect example of a bad decision to which any taxpayer would object. The first R is &#8216;representation&#8217; \u2013 making Government and our public institutions more representative of the public they serve. One of my first visits in post was to Scotland to encourage more people from outside London to apply for public appointments, running our museums, our prisons, and our hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>I believe we need greater diversity in these roles \u2013 and by that, I don&#8217;t mean the usual ethnic and gender diversity, but diversity of background, geography and most importantly in thought and belief. Groupthink must be avoided at all costs.<\/p>\n<p>I am looking carefully at the Government&#8217;s expenditure on external &#8216;equality, diversity and inclusion&#8217; consultants. To me the common sense solution is one set of guidance for the whole civil service to follow. Let&#8217;s practise diversity and inclusion, not waste taxpayers&#8217; money preaching it. The second R is &#8216;responsive&#8217; \u2013 how our public services respond to the real needs of taxpayers. There&#8217;s far too much hand-wringing, where trained professionals are worrying &#8216;how&#8217; they do their job instead of just doing it.<\/p>\n<p>I want to unshackle these dedicated workers, giving them more time to do what they do best and not to feel the need to constantly cover their backs in case an honest mistake is made.<\/p>\n<p>The final R is &#8216;Reassurance&#8217; \u2013 giving the public peace of mind that we are spending their hard-earned money wisely. We are already making great progress on this. We recently passed a law to bring more competition and innovation to public contracts, and we have already saved taxpayers over \u00a3300million through the Public Sector Fraud Authority. This Government and the Prime Minister are showing that we&#8217;re not afraid to challenge the consensus to reduce waste and save money.<\/p>\n<p>Now we have succeeded in halving inflation, our priority is to control spending so that we can cut taxes.
