Scotland: Sharron Davies speaks out against SNP gender policy

The SNP has announced they will finally abandon attempts to introduce a controversial Gender Reform Bill that would have made it easier for trans people to change gender.

Earlier this month the Court of Session, Scotland’s highest court, sided with the UK Government, which vetoed the policy for the first time in devolution history.

Following their humiliating defeat, Scottish Ministers could have appealed the decision.

However today they confirmed they will not waste further taxpayer cash pursuing that route.

Speaking in Holyrood, Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville said the Scottish Government continues to stand with trans people, but have accepted Rishi Sunak’s Westminster administration will not budge.

Speaking in Holyrood, Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville said the Scottish Government continues to stand with trans people, but have accepted Rishi Sunak’s Westminster administration will not budge.

Ms Somerville said it is “impossible to see how progress can be made”.

“Our offer is still there. If the current UK Government is willing to work together on this we will happily sit down with them. If a future UK Government are willing, we will do so with them so that the Section 35 can be lifted and the bill progresses.

“It seems clear that the current government will not do this, and it remains to be seen if a future government will do.”

While the SNP have conceded defeat in the short term, the minister let slip the party’s new strategy to lobby a potential Keir Starmer government to cave in and allow the bill to pass.
