Robert Jenrick says ECHR isn’t working
Kemi Badenoch has added her weight to calls for the Britain to leave the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) and end the power of Strasbourg based foreign judges to overrule British laws.
The intervention by the Business and Trade Secretary heaps pressure on Rishi Sunak to at least include the proposal in the next election manifesto.
Ms Badenoch became the second Cabinet minister to back leaving the ECHR in a week after Home Secretary Suella Braverman confirmed her belief that it was out of date in a speech in Washington DC on Tuesday.
Some believe Ms Badenoch’s intervention is to win back support on the right of the party if there is a leadership contest after a Tory defeat in the next election.
Currently, Ms Braverman has stolen a march on her rival as the candidate of the right.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, Ms Badenoch said that the Conservative Party needs “an honest conversation” about leaving the ECHR and that the option “needs to be on the table”.
And in a response to the left of her party who have attacked Ms Braverman, she added: “It is certainly not racist to talk about reviewing conventions that we joined about 100 years ago.”
The intervention is the latest push from the right of the Conservative Party to set the agenda at the conference in Manchester this week.
Already the ECHR and tax cuts are set to dominate at a number of events including a “rally for the manifesto” organised by the New Conservatives and Common Sense Group with allies of Boris Johnson on the right of the party.
A Restoring Conservatism even on Tuesday with Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg and Lord Frost will also push for a change of direction.

With the conference set to be dominated by the right of the Conservatives, Mr Sunak appears to be showing he is listening.
According to the Sunday Telegraph, he has indicated that he will ignore the ECHR in Strasbourg if its judges try to veto deportation flights of illegal migrants to Rwanda again.
The move could be a first step to end the court’s jurisdiction in the UK.
The ECHR has been seen as the main problem in UK efforts to stop the small boats and illegal migration.
In particular, a decision to block deportations to Rwanda has provoked fury and fuelled demands to ditch the convention.
