Brit killed and six others injured in horrifying luxury yacht crash in Italy

A British man has died and six others were injured after a horrifying luxury yacht crash in Italy.

The unidentified English man, 63, was unconscious but still alive after the 'Amore' crashed into rocks near Porto Cervo, on the island of Sardinia, at around 8.40pm on Sunday (July 31).

The coastguard was able to reach him after nearby boats raised the alarm, but he died immediately after the rescue according to local media.

The six others who were injured were able to get off the yacht in Porto Cervo.

Two were deemed to be in a serious condition and were taken to hospital following assessments from emergency doctors.

According to Italian state broadcaster Rai, the man who died was the owner of the 70-foot luxury yacht.

It is thought that it crashed into rocks when sailing in front of the Li Nibani Islands, possibly as the captain attempted to manoeuvre to avoid colliding with another boat.

One source told the Daily Mail: "The theory is the boat that ran aground was trying frantically to steer out of the way of another which didn't have right of way and she ended up on the rocks."

The vessel was half-submerged but reports suggest it has now been recovered and towed to Porto Cervo.

Coast guards have now sealed off the area where the crash happened while investigations continue.

One bystander said on social media that five ambulances attended the scene.

Porto Cervo is a popular tourist resort for the wealthy, located on the Costa Smeralda in the northeast of Sardinia.
