A man’s half-eaten body was found after staff at a zoo in Pakistan saw a big cat carrying a shoe in its mouth.

The incident occurred at Bahawalpur’s Sherbagh Zoo in the Punjab province on Wednesday, CBS News reported.

Zoo staff had been cleaning the exhibits when they discovered the big cat, a term for a tiger or leopard in Pakistan, according to government official Zaheer Anwar.

Anwar said: “When they cleaned the zoo and the dens, they found the (animal) holding a shoe in its mouth.”

Anwar added: “The staff got suspicious and then they found a body inside the den.”

The individual is believed to have possibly jumped into the den, he said.

Anwar said: “Our assessment so far is that this appears to be a lunatic because a sensible person would not jump into the den.

“You can see that the den is secured. There are stairs behind the den, maybe he jumped from there.”

One of the rescue workers at the zoo said that the victim’s legs looked like they were mauled by the animal.

He told reporters: “It is yet not known who he is and how he got there. It is being investigated. The body looked several hours old.”

The investigation is ongoing.
