The girl who tragically died after a car crashed into a school in Wimbledon on Thursday (July 6) has been identified.
Tributes to Selena Lau, eight, have been placed at The Study Preparatory School on Camp Road where the Land Rover Defender crashed shortly before 10am, while an end-of-term tea party was taking place.
In a short statement via the police, her family said "Selena was an intelligent and cheeky girl adored and loved by everyone. The family wishes their privacy to be respected at this sad time”.
A woman wearing a blue sling was seen visiting the scene on Friday (July 7) while being consoled by a man. She left flowers in a box alongside a card that read: "Dear Selena, you will always be our shining star. We will miss you so much."
Another tribute read: "To the Study and parents. So sorry for this tragic loss to the school and the family. Forever in our thoughts."
London Ambulance Service said 15 ambulances rushed to the school on Thursday, with 16 patients treated at the scene. A total of 12 were taken to hospital.
Police said on Friday afternoon that an eight-year-old girl and a woman in her 40s remain in a critical condition.
A 46-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. She has been bailed pending further enquiries to a date in late July.
The Metropolitan Police said they are not treating the incident as terror-related. They lifted the police cordon on Friday morning, allowing flowers and tributes to be placed at the entrance of the school.
The Study Preparatory School said in a statement: “We are profoundly shocked by the tragic accident this morning at Wilberforce House and devastated that it has claimed the life of one of our young pupils, as well as injuring several others.
“Our thoughts are with the bereaved family and with the families of those injured at this terrible time.
“It is still far too soon to fully understand what happened, but we are well aware of the significant impact this dreadful event will have on our pupils and their families.
“Their welfare remains our top priority and we will be doing everything we can to support them, especially those who suffered injuries.
“Now that a police investigation is underway we will not be making any further public statement for the time being and would ask that the privacy of our school community is respected at this deeply upsetting time.”
The school costs £5,565 per term and is for girls aged four to 11. It sits on Wimbledon Common.
